i am not out there to support or go against nancy pelosi. what i am saying is that we need to have a serious conversation and listen to the american people and develop a new strategy. and whoever leads our party ought to have a strategy and that's what we ought to vote on. i came to office through a competitive primary. i had to listen to the constituents i would come to represent. we need to do that as a democratic party before we just rush into a new term with exactly the same plan that we've always had. >> you are from a blue state, but you were elected during the republican wave two years ago. you are 38. a combat veteran. you campaigned on a platform of bringing bipartisan leadership to washington. many see you as a rising star in the democratic party. why not put your name in the mix? >> look, i have only been here for a couple of years. i spent a lot more time in the marines than i have in congress. but i think it was important in this case for someone who was not interested in running him or herself to stand up there and say we need

how much is nancy pelosi to blame for that? >> well, i want to talk more about moving forward, but we lost a significant amount of seats in 2010. didn't really do well in '14. didn't do well in '12, lost again in '14 and only picked up six seats last time. in 2010, the republicans ran $260,000 worth of ads for pelosi and that sank us. the question is, how do we move forward? >> what is it that you think makes her so unappetizing to voters? >> $60,000 in republican ads. i think our failure as a caucus has been not to focus on economic issues. i think we -- i'm supportive of all the issues that we talk about, but you need a robust economic message that covers everybody, and we failed to do that consistently in the last number of years. >> i want to talk about the state of the party because i want to look at some other numbers about where house democrats are from now in the country. let's put this map up. more than one-third of the members in the new house, democrats, come from just three states: california, new york and massachus

specifically for the nancy pelosi. one of her proteges, tim ryan of ohio is challenging her next week. larry gursen is with us. can pelosi be forced out here? >> potentially she can. ryan's going to have a very tough uphill battle for the party election because it requires a majority vote of democrats to win. pelosi was last challenged in 2010, then by heath shuler after the democrats were clobbered in the midterm election. pelosi crushed shuler 150-43. this time she claims she has 2/3 of the democratic votes locked up. still, the fact is the vote is by secret ballot, which makes counting nearly impossible. >> and she's a brand name around here and across the country. >> about the minority leader. the minority leader is the highest ranking member of his or her party in the house. they have the job of keeping the party together and carries great sway over committee assignment and other important tasks and it's likely to become speaker should her party gain a majority in the house which happened between 2009 and 2012. >>

from those two coasts, isn't a san francisco liberal like nancy pelosi a shoo-in? >> i don't think so, because even members of the coastal states recognize that we aren't a national party now. we can't claim to be. i think they recognize these are the smartest political figures coming out of their areas. they're members of congress. they've beat elected officials political figures in their region. they understand politics, and i think they understand this is about having a new message and a new messenger and being able to reach those folks. the numbers are big, but they know if we don't get the middle of the country, we won't get back the majority. >> here's how pelosi explained the election results about ten days ago. here she is. >> the problem is more with the communication than it was with our policy. so our lives are those very people who didn't communicate the successes we had. >> is it just a communication issue? >> it's a big part of it, but we can't keep saying it's a communication issue. we've been saying it's a communication issue since 2010. so we've go

i don't think that nancy pelosi is going to lose her job. but i do think that a challenge, if it helps sort of awaken them, and look at how they're going to lead moving forward, and look for new leadership in terms of the vice chair i think it's a good thing. i think nancy pelosi is going to take it seniorsly and look into how she can make some changes. >> i don't know if it's a challenge but we still win if you look at it seriously. donald trump and mike pence go to indiana. they talk to carrier. they convince that company to stay, to keep some jobs in the united states. instead of moving them to mexico. why weren't the democrats doing those sorts of things? isn't that something that the democrats might consider? >> well, i think it's also important to note, carol, that they also promised carrier huge corporate tax breaks, and carrier still moved a number of their jobs -- >> we don't know that yet. >> well, they said that that's what they want to do. we just heard the new secretary of the treasury, talk about reforming taxes. taxes, and tax
