joining us now for an exclusive interview, eric schneiderman. tell me what you think is in the arsenal of state attorneys general in terms of dealing with this administration, and what are the arenas you see so far in the trump policy arena that would come into conflict with some state attorneys general? >> well, states under the federalist system are the essential units of government. states retain all powers not specifically given to the government under the constitution and the founders in their wisdom did create this two-tier system of protection. so we have state civil rights laws, and if they come after any vulnerable minority right, jews, muslims, we can protect them. we also have the ability to sue the epa. this is not just a matter of one administration or another, my office filed a notion of intent to sue under a democratic president because the epa wasn't issuing greenhouse gas regulations fast enough. the states have tremendous power, and that's by constitutional design. the founders thought a lot about the possibility of a monarch.

trust us, you don't want to be in touch with eric schneiderman. the new york attorney general, when he picks up the phone and calls, there's a problem. the largest report data theft in the history of the internet and turns out in august of 2013, just coming to light now. hackers stole names, telephone numbers, dates of birth, passwords, you name it from more than a billion people out there. this attack is separate from the one you just recently heard about from 2014 where yahoo! had 500 million customers breached and people were saying, whoa, 500 million? add to that a billion. we want to bring in aol co-founder steve case. not only is this a personal user issue, it's a business issue. yahoo! may be left at altar by verizon who proposed to buy the business for $4.8 billion in july. is the deal off? >> hard to say if the deal is off. verizon is looking at the information and trying to figure out a way to renegotiate the price down lower. partly the size of this breach, the billion users and the timing, the fact that happened three years ago, verizo

patti ann: new york attorney general eric schneiderman as you heard is investigating. you heard questions about the foundation spending benefited his running for president, and violations with filing for irs next year among other things. schneiderman is a democrat. is this probe politically motivated do you believe and are these valid questions? >> i think these are valid questions and whether to ask the attorney general who is politically motivated this attorney general announced his intention of using power of office to investigate other politically-motivated areas such as climate change and exxonmobil. eric schneiderman it's a fair question to ask but at same time the president-elect has real transparency issues that need to be addressed before january 20th. patti ann: schneiderman as we heard, his office said this weekend that the trump foundation can not legally dissolve until this investigation is complete. mr. trump says, and i quote here, because i will be devoting so much time and energy to the presidency, i don't want to allow good work to be associated with

joining me now is the new york attorney general eric schneiderman. welcome. so, you sort of been mr. trump's nemesis through this whole process. do you consider yourself that? >> no. i just enforce the laws of the state of new york and i did sue him over his own university, basically just settled recently, and terms were very favorable to the victims of that. and look we're not dealing with abstract fights. it's important to understand that under our federalist system most law enforcement activity takes place at the state and local level. federal law enforcement is a very tiny portion. state attorneys general, police departments, we're the ones who protect people. the week after the election ee had a spike in hate crimes in new york. we're dealing with real time real problems. then we had a rise in scams against immigrants telling them trump's going to deport you, send us money, we'll help you out. we're dealing with the media collateral effects of the election of a guy whose rhetoric has frightened a lot of people and is threatening to a lot of people. we ha

back in october new york attorney general eric schneiderman ordered the foundation to stop raising money in new york saying the charity was not registered to do so under state law and there has been a good amount of reporting from "the washington post" about this charitable foundation and it's been the go-to. i mean it was -- he has not given money to it or at least t had not been giving money between 2009 to 2015. he raised outside funds for the foundation and then some questions as to the donations that were made by the foundation, not just to buy portraits of himself and a tim tebow signed football, but also perhaps even more importantly payments of $100,000 and $158,000 where it had to do with legal trouble that he had to deal with and, therefore, said we'll make a charitable gift as a settlement and it came from the foundation, which as we know is potentially other people's money and not his own. >> and the instinct at work here is to make it an anti-media take. nobody will report on the good work my foundation has done, therefore, we have to leave with this impression it wasn't doi
