and eastern iowa is also seeing that growth. just today, a new urgent care center opened in cedar falls. and another will start welcoming patients next week in dubuque. they are part of the 50 to 100 urgent care clinics and more than nine thousand centers have opened in the u-s since 2008. kcrg t-v nine's katie wiedemann joins us live from unity point finley's newest urgent care center. katie, there's a definite reason for opening this new clinic. the goal is to give more people an alternative to going to the emergency room, if they don't really need to. but they tell us, even after opening the first urgent care patients are still going to the e-r. the hospital says more patients want urgent care because it takes too long for them to get into their primary care doctor. they say one reason doctors are swamped is because of the affordable care act. many more people are eligible to go to the doctor, so they do. since then, they say there's been a pent-up demand for patients to get quick care for non- emergency medical needs. when u

at the iowa city public library. tonight, a dubuque school committee will talk about using a controversial book in future curriculum. some parents have an issue with the book "the perks of being a wallflower". it's required reading for students at hempstead high school. the parents say the book's "graphic sex scenes" and depictions of drugs and alcohol use surprised them. since the last meeting, the committee has read the book to better judge its educational value. tonight's open discussion starts at 5:30 at the forum. that's on a program that provides high-school students with real-world experiences wants to double its reach with a new school in marion. iowa big made that announcement last night at its open house in cedar rapids. the new location will be in partnership with linn-mar schools. and it's made possible, in part, because of a $1 million dollar grant. that grant came the x-q- the super school project, which promotes a different type of learning. school leaders are now working to find a location for the new

and the iowa state patrol is calling it an accident. just before 10 this morning, the pick-up went through the front doors of the walmart, smashing displays and hitting at least four people. the three who died were all adults, two of which worked at the store. the driver also was injure. evacuated the store. walmart released a statement this afternoon that said it's heartbroken about what happened. it says it'll continue to work with police investigating the crash. authorities in three states are dealing with more shootings of police officers. in tacoma, washington, police say a shooting last night killed a veteran officer who was responding to a domestic violence call. officer reginald "jake" gutierrez had been with the department since 1999. witnesses domestic situation when he suddenly opened fire, shooting gutierrez. that led to a 12 hour standoff with two children inside the home. it ended when police killed the gunman. sot " mayor strickland: we love our officers, we know that there is always a chance that they may not come home.

eastern iowa is seeing a growth in urgent care centers. that's part of a national trend according to the american academy of urgent care medicine. a new urgent care center opened in cedar falls yesterday. and another will start urgent care clinics that open each year in the u-s. and more than 9,000 centers have opened in the u-s since 2008. the center say the goal is to give more people an alternative to going to the emergency room. but they say that - even after opening the first urgent care clinic earlier this year - the same number of patients are still going to the e-r. the hospital says more patients want urgent care because it's faster. when unity point finley opened this urgent care clinic back in august, they number of patients visiting the e-r. "what we believe is happening is patients who've had to go outside our local community to get health care in order to get access. " brandon says patients living in dubuque have been traveling to places like waterloo or cedar rapids. that's just to be treated for something like a sore throat

protesters have been asked to leave in iowa -- pipeline protesters went to the iowa utilities board -- where some have been demanding a meeting. two of those people got arrested for blocking a door to a conference room. those two have also been fasting for ten days as part of their is not good for any of us, and that stand up and do the right thing here. and to make sure the people of this board do the right thing ." despite arrests -- the two say their fast will continue. they plan to go back to the iowa utilities board until they get a meeting. one eastern iowa humane society is asking for help taking care of a growing population. the cedar bend humane society is making room for the large number per month right now.. which is very unusual. the humane society's starting a new program this month... calling it home for the holidays.. asking people to foster a cat or any that are already on our adoption floor, and take them into their animals up for adoption. if that makes sense, because right now this is all we have room for." if you can't foster or adopt.. asking for donations. coming
