nbc's jacob rascon is at harvey, louisiana, with more on this controversy. what are police saying? >> the sheriff's department says that the investigation is ongoing, its investigators are reaching out to witnesses that they had not contacted the day of the shooting. as they contact the witnesses and gather evidence they will consult with the d.a.'s office to determine what if any charges are -- are appropriate here because there's no doubt that this person, ronal gasser, gunned down joe mcknight. he stayed on the scene, hand wanted over his weapon. the question when it is justifiable or when there are other charges that are appropriate, there were some rumors when this happened that he was standing over the body swearing at him and shooting him. the sheriff yesterday said those and other rumors are not true. in fact, it was mcknight who got out of his car, went ever to gasser's car, the passenger's side, and. then gasser shot him from inside the car after some argument. so they're going through that. they're going through other witness statements. and they wanted to put some rumor

police have identified the shooter. mcknight played at usc, before going to the nfl in 2010, where he played for the new york jets and kansas city chiefs. in utah-- parents rush to a junior high school after a student fires a gun inside the school. police say a 15-year-old student pulled a gun inside a classroom yesterday morning and fired it into the ceiling. he then pointed the gun at his neck. officials say a teacher and student-- which authorities say may have delayed further violence. the student's parents came to the school and disarmed the teen. police say the student that fired the gun did not point it anyone other than himself. he's been booked into a juvenile detention facility on multiple charges. more than 700 people... that's how many have been killed so far this year in chicago. it's the first time in nearly 20 years the city's recorded more than 700 murders. compare that 468 murders in 2015... police superintendent eddie johnson says poor education and of the problem. police also say more than 90-percent

officers in baton rouge, louisiana, five others murdered at the hands of a gunman in dallas, texas. with this spate of shootings in georgia, 2016 now becomes well above the number that we saw for officers killed in the line of duty in 2015 to be fair, 2015 was one of the safest years in the last ten years for anyone to be a police officer because this year georgia has been the fourth deadliest state for anyone putting on a badge and one of the shootings that's gotten a lot of attention is the murder of two best friends. one of them, an americus police officer, the other a friend of his from a nearby university police department. he responded because he didn't want his friend to not have backup. both of those men you're looking at on your screen were schott and killed. one of them was engaged to be married, the other was going to be his best man. in 2016 one of the deadliest years for officers in the last 10 years 64 shot and killed in the line of duty. they range from rookies to veterans, from west coast to east coast and it seems brooke anyone who put on a badge this year in americ
