charles krauthammer joins us from washington with his reaction. your take. >> i thought he did very well. there were moments that were somewhat uncomfortable, like the one you showed with rubio, assa assad, and war crimes. the theme of what tillerson was saying was i'm not into making gestures or make pronouncements prayed we saw what he said about ukraine. his critique of obama was not that he was insufficiently demonstrative but that he didn't give defensive weapons or intelligence to actually help the ukrainians defend themselves. that's a pretty hardheaded approach. even though he wouldn't exceed to demand that he go around denouncing putin and assad for war crimes, he seemed to be saying we are going to be tough. as for the sanctions imposed for the interference with our elections, i think he is right. they are puny, insignificant party won't repeal them but he leaves it an open question as to whether, once they decide how to act, how putin reacts to the new administration. seems to be a reasonable position. >> bret: opportune we are talking

now, for the top story reactions, joining us from washington, charles krauthammer. harry reid is gone. he single-handedly rallied enough democrats to block "kate's law" in the senate's last time around. do you expect it to pass? >> yes, i do. i mean, as you say, we have had an election. immigration was a major issue. kate steinle is a slam dunk. it is really hard to imagine a logical argument against it. i don't think it is the most important of the measures. it is probably -- it is way down the list because the population to which it applies is rather small. but as you say, i agree with you on this, it is very symbolic and it is a sign of things to come. there was essentially a referendum on and immigration the details weren't there. but in the current mood of the country, with the new administration that made immigration a major issue, i think it would be very hard for it to be filibustered. there are ten democratic senators who are coming from states that went republican, that one for trump come up for reelection in 2018. they would have to tread very carefully t

krauthammer. guy, thoughts on today's actions prayed >> on the pipelines, this is a lay up for trump. good optics, good economics, good politics. clear pivot away from the obama administration that slow walked these things and killed the pipelines for political reasons. that was a pander to certain interest within the democratic coalition, well moneyed interests on the environmental green side of things and trump is not going to be indebted to them. this rolls into a neat package, a number of different narratives trump wants to pursue about his administration, creating jobs, putting working people to work, and no one is going to be cheering louder than some of those union bosses with whom he met yesterday. a lot of bipartisan support for this, a smart move, no-brainer. >> bret: the union image, the fact that he had the meeting with seven unions who all endorsed hillary clinton in the election was quite something. >> this is a short-term thing. permanent jobs will not be plentiful as a result of th

edward-isaac dovere, and charles krauthammer. okay, isaac, your thoughts on this and how it has been perceived? >> we have a statement from the president-elect that seems to take the presentation seriously, more seriously than he had been taking it from the tweets that he had been putting out to this point. what we don't have is any clear acceptance from him of the assessment from the intelligence community. it seems like at least his team is continuing to question it, and we have a statement from him and then from the base president-elect saying that they will be taking new action once they are in office. but it doesn't change with the 17 agencies put together, what they are saying is very high certainty here of russia's intent and russia's role in the influence of the election. >> bret: charles? >> i think trump understands that the fight he is and is a losing proposition. he is in what should be the honeymoon period of his presidency. he is supposed to start when he is sworn in, supposed to be anticipated, like most presidents
