marshall. i think we have made good friends with him. i have always had respect for his really outstanding qualities, if not as a strategist, an organizer of armies, a statesman, and above all, a man." if not as a strategist. in my lecture tonight, i would like to examine churchill's extraordinary backhanded compliment to marshall and look at the grand strategy marshall wanted to be adopted for winning world war ii. for the u.s. army chief of staff needs to be a statesman and an organizer of armies and much else besides, but he also primarily needs to be america's chief military strategist. there is no more important duty for chief of staff dan to -- fan n to formulate the strategy by which america wins its wars. did marshall fall down on that area? as churchill, lord alan brooke makes it clear in his diaries and general montgomery says that -- make it clear that they did. all three believe he was not a good strategist because he incidentally advocated a return to german occupied northwest euro

john marshall harlan said i want the supreme court to hear about ed johnson's conviction and sentence. well, that did not go over well with the lynch mob which at the -- with the help of local officials kidnapped ed johnson from his jail cell, took him to a bridge over the tennessee river and happeninged him and shot him -- hanged him and shot him more than 50 times including phi times at point blank range by a deputy sheriff. and the deputy sheriff left a note pinned to ed johnson's body, and the note said "justice harlan: come get your n-word now." so that was the supreme court's first experience of trying to engage the southern practice of legal lynching. twenty some odd years later in a case many of you probably will have heard of, it was nine young black men who were accused of raping two white women on a rail car, they came to be known as the scottsboro boys because they were arrested in scottsboro. and they were boys not in the derogatory sense of black men, they were boys. all of them were teenagers. not one of them was older than 20 years old. and they were tried very quickly
