bob redell is reporting from one. policemen and emergency personnel are going door to door to get people out of downtown san jose where we've seen flooding. >> 36,000 people impacted by the flooding in the san jose area. fortunately we have sunny skies today. let's get a check on the forecast with meteorologist kari hal. >> and janelle, we are seeing how massive and expansive the coyote creek is, how long it run, going from the anderson reservoir all the way through san jose and milpitas and draining into the bay. the reservoir is still over capacity and flowing at 104%. and this is a new record here. we've been talking about this. it's never gotten up to 13.6 feet, which is where it peaked yesterday afternoon. the old record was 12.8 feet in 1922. so, the flood concern is still ongoing, even into the day tomorrow. and it will drop below flood stage this evening at edenville, but farther up to the north, but downstream from the reservoir, it will continue to flood and very slowly drop. now, looking at those reservoir

reporting live here along the coyote creek in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." >>> bob, thank you very much. as we mentioned, one of the areas to get hit the hardest in the storm, the santa cruz mountains. and all eyes are on the san lorenzo river expected to rise rapidly creating dangerous conditions for those who live nearby. that's where we find chris sanchez live to explain how the dangerous conditions have turned deadly. kris? >> reporter: well, hi there, sam. we finally can show you what the san lorenzo river looks like. earlier it was raining so hard it kept blowing out all the lights. so now you can see that the water is moving very swiftly. this river is at 8.5 feet. by 4:00 this afternoon, it's expected to reach 21.5 feet, which is considered a major flood stage. now yesterday swift water rescue crews had to brave that river to pull the body of the man from the water. we now know he's a 46-year-old man from ben loman. the coroner won't be able to say if he drowned until an autopsy is done later this week. this happened behind dick sergeant's home. >> we were standing

nbc bay area's bob redell is live in san jose. thousands and thousands of people, bob. snoob good morning to you, kris. finally here in the rock springs neighborhood, the water is going back to where it belongs. right back into coyote creek. you're looking at the end of a pump line here, the city of san jose has been pumping round the clock water out of this neighborhood. if you look at the debris there on that chain link fence you can see how high the water came up during the flood earlier this week. this was one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods, but because of the round the clock pumping as you walk out here onto rock springs road, one of the main streets in this neighborhood, you could see that the water was removed. but what remains is that mud. it's mud mixed with sewage. this neighborhood will remain under a mandatory evacuation until workers are able to scrape up this muck. the city is able to inspect these homes, and pg&e is able to restore power and gas. some residents, however, are refusing to wait and have already come back to see what's left of their homes.

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san jose to show us what is left behind this morning. the city is expected to release a big number today. >> correct. good morning. city of san jose expected to release the dollar amount of damage caused by last week's floods. they would use this number and present it to the state and feds in order to get disaster relief for people living in these homes like neighborhood here in rock strings in san jose which you can see a number of apartments are still yellow tagged. that means that the people can go back inside to clean their home from the flood belongings but not supposed to live there. the city of san jose tells us it has finished inspecting the thousands of structures flooded last week. the majority just over 4,500 are green tagged clear for moving back in. only three homes remain red tagged in the william street neighborhood. that means no going back inside. remaining just over -- until then many residents like this one are stuck in limbo. >> we don't know what's next. i don't know what to do. my kids, we have no place to live. no

bob redell, today in the bay. >>> thank you very much. who knew what and when? our investigative unit has uncovered showing state and federal agencies were warned a situation could occur around the oroville spillway. >>> a victim killed on 580 in dublin a little after 1:00 this morning. a car hit the man as he walked in the westbound hov ramp. the driver of the car stayed at the scene. neither drugs nor alcohol played a factor. no word why the victim was in the roadway. >> new details now on a story we first brought you yesterday morning. surveillance cameras catching a quick glimpse of the silver car that struck a 70-year-old woman in south san francisco on sunday. the victim was in a crosswalk. police say the car sped off, leaving the woman in critical condition. investigators say the caore wasa honda civic or toyota camera, which will have damage to the lower front end. >>> dogs are getting bacteria called lepto. the rain is helping to spread it around. five cases in three months compared to what is typically two per year. in two of the five dogs didn't survi

bob redell along highway 17. how is the commute looking so far, bob? >>> good morning, laura. trance and chp have taken southbound 17 and turned that into a two-lane highway. northbound 17, if you look where the white lights are, the mudslide covering one of the lanes northbound. caltrans expected back out here in an hour and a half. they are waiting on a special piece of equipment later today. a mountain of mud spilled onto the lanes northbound 17 between sugarloaf and vine hill roads causing a vehicle to roll over. that driver is okay. workers are trying to be careful not to remove too much material from the bottom of the slide. otherwise, the material on the top can-can come sliding down. caltrans has ordered a special piece of equipment they call the spider. it will be able to remove debris at the top of the slide. >> each wheel is a separate arm that can kind of fold out and you can climb up with the spider. >> it is horrifying. we had a bus full of kids come two hours before this landslide. it could have been all of our children in that accident there. >> incidentally wh

bob redell is live with what happened. what do we know about the folks on board? >>> good morning to you, kris and sam. nbc bay area news spoke to a neighbor that lives next to the pilot. the pilot lived in this he was an experienced pilot and he and his wife avid travelers. it is is sad. it shows the cessna 310 from riverside municipal airport. it passes by a surveillance camera 4:30 yesterday afternoon. the plane carrying five people. crashed into two homes, setting both on fire. at least one part of the airplane found a half mile away. three of the five people on board died. two men, both in their late 30s, early 40s, survived. both being treated for their injuries. one who was ejected from the plane, was able to cry for help. >> i heard the lady who was pulled out. i heard her scream, help me, help me. i need help. we just didn't know where she was. it was very scary. >>> you can see cell phone video shot by a woman where the plane crashed. it shows a man running from one homes that caught fire he was doing a cross word puzzle when the plane crashed through hi

bob redell, today in the bay. >> bob, thank you very much. 6:38. right now water spilling out of the main spill in oroville. we are closely monitoring that situation. that's the dam up north, not far from chico. the rain is falling in the area. at the moment water levels are well below the threshold for the emergency spillway to be activated. federal regulators issued a warning back 2011 saying the communities downstream of the dam would not receive enough warning time for an evacuation if the dam failed. right now regulators are stressing it is not in of failing. crews are still working to make those repairs. nearly 200,000 people who live near the dam were issued were mandatory evacuation but they were lifted earlier this week. >>> 6:39. now to breaking news we have been falling for you overnight. fire crews have been working through rain and snow after a fire started in a long-standing restaurant in the east bay. this is footage september into our newsroom at 4:00 this morning. flames and smoke overtook k.c.'s barbecue on san pablo at 12:30. an

. >> today in the bay bob redell is live along 680 to show us some of the conditions there. the lens is fogged over a little bit. all the moisture out there, bob. >>> good morning to you, laura and sam. it's been on and off rain in walnut creek. as you can see right now, we're on. the drive of a black dodge pickup truck learned the hard way why you need to be careful during this morning's commute. of an hour ago, a little before 5:00 this morning, this driver was headed southbound on 680 when, according to cp, this person hydroplaned north of monument boulevard, ended up facing the wrong of traffic on 680. two other vehicles t-boned the pickup truck. from what we are able to gather and tell, it does not appear anyone was hurt badly. as you were able to see in that video, this truck was moved to the side road and is not impacting the commute. traffic is moving quite well on southbound 680. if you look at our nbc bay area weather app, you can see here, according to our weather radar, we're roughly in this area right here and according to our weather radar, there's a lot of ora

. >>> bob redell is live with fears that the water district has after all of this rain. good morning. >>> good morning to you, sam and laura. the santa clara valley water district is concerned that if there were major earthquake, a magnitude 7.25 or greater, that the anderson dam could become damaged. that's why you see this tremendous water flow behind me. i want you to take a listen. it's very loud, very hard to miss as you are driving through morgan hill. the district has opened the gate in an attempt the get the reservoir to drop. but with the recent rains and projected storms of the bay, they could not get rid of the water fast enough. sometimes the incoming rain has been outpacing the release. back in 2009, they discovered the dam built in 1950 was particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. it was decided the reservoir should never go above 68% capacity. that has been difficult to change with recent storms. the reservoir is releasing 400 cubic feet of water per secretary. even at that rate, the district projects it could take four to nine weeks to get back down to 68%

bob redell is live in the rock springs neighborhood, one of the hard-hit areas. bob, pretty soon we'll get a ball-park dollar amount for the damage that was caused. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. we spoke with the city of san jose earlier this morning. they tell us they're still compiling the dollar amount of damage caused by last week's floods. they expect to have the number out later today. the city needs to come up with the estimate so it can apply for disaster relief from the state and federal governments. based on what we have seen here in the rock springs neighborhood, one of the neighborhoods that was hardest hit by last week's flood, we sxkt t expect the number to be significant. you can see the water in parts was 4 to 5 feet deep, submerging cars and flooding homes. six days after the flood, this neighborhood is still a mess. residents are returning to salvage what they can. mostly clothes and other small items that they were able to elevate as the water rose out of nearby coyote creek last tuesday. the city has finished inspecting

bob redell is live with what happened and where. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. this happened on mowry avenue. that road is reopened in time for this morning's commute. it was around 4:15 yesterday afternoon that an officer with fremont police department was responding to a fight that took place between at least two people. this was at or near a business on mowry. the officer found the suspect a short distance away on mowry at sutter. fremont police say this man got into a physical altercation, that's how they describe it, with their officer who is also a man. that's when the officer shot the suspect. pd says officers responding to the scene provided medical care until paramedics arrived and they declared the man dead at the scene. the officer was treated at a local hospital and released. they did notify the district attorney's office about the shooting, which is normal when an officer is involved. reporting live here outside free month police headquarters, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank y

bob redell is live outside the courthouse. who is on the witness stand now? good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sam. the prosecution just finished cross-examining one of sierra lamar's best friends to help refute the defense theory that lamar was not murdered by garcia-torres but instead ran away because she was unhappy with her life in morgan hill, a town she had recently moved to in the days -- the time before she disappeared. she testified that lamar was going to sleep over at her house on the day lamar was abducted to the bus stop in morgan hill. she testified sierra never made it to her home and hasn't seen or heard from her since. they played videos that they made the week prior. the clip shows sierra lip syncing to rap music laughing and making funny faces. forman also testified that sierra was on her phone a lot, that she would, quote, freak out if she lost it or didn't have it. lamar's phone was found in morgan hill in a field less than a week after she disappeared. the prosecution trying to show that, if she did run away, why didn't she take he
