joining me is chris cillizza, msnbc contributor and founder of "the washington post" fix blog. how do you read that? >> you tell us one of the most republican states in the country, but this is a place where there's been a lot of resistance to donald trump. now i do think there was another town hall in murfreesboro, tennessee, last night, a strongly republican area, and in that one you saw more booing, more questions about obamacare, more questions about trump. what you see is an activated democratic electorate who is going out to register their disapproval with how people like chaffetz are doing things. now that said i think there are some republicans and independents there as well. i don't know what to make of it but i will tell you, remember, eight years ago in 2009, the leading edge of what happened in 2010 was the discontent registered in these town halls with democratic members about the affordable care act. so we may well be seeing that, or it could just be sort of a spurt here and an outbreak there. >> and another new development is i've confirmed now that elliott abram

msnbc's matt bradley joins me now live from paris. what do we know? i know they just had a briefing. we've learned more about the attacker, matt? >> reporter: that's right, kate. they have some new details emerging about the identity of this attacker. french prosecutors say it was a 29-year-old egyptian man who arrived in paris just last week after he had spent a couple months in dubai, where he was applying for a visa to get into the area where he's allowed to move around europe. these new details show this man actually was wearing a t-shirt with a skull and crossbones on it. he was carrying machetes, not one, but two, one in each hand. he attacked this group of passing soldiers. these aren't police officers. these are soldiers. that just goes to show the level of anxiety that's gone on in paris and throughout france. so he came after these four so will soldiers after he was refused entry to a high-end shopping mall. it lies underneath this entire complex that makes up the louver museum. one of the most famous museums, most visited museums in the ent

i want to start with msnbcs casey hunt live on capitol hill. casey, you are on the inside, 24 hours. how is this expected to go down? >> well, steph, you have this new piece of information from debby stabenow, that she threw out there late last night. we have been talking to senators who we thought might flip on this the last three or four days here on capitol hill. from what we can tell, the reporting shows the count is still standing at 50-50. we have talked to a number of democrats or republicans from more moderate states or states where there might be one democrat and one republican senator, places like north dakota, for example. so far, we can't find somebody who is willing to flip. we think, at this point, mike pence will cast the tie-breaking vote. it would be an historic tie-breaking vote. no vice president has ever broke a tie on a cabinet nomination before. public pressure like this has unpredictable consequences. we will continue to talk to members to see if there is somebody else. of course, donald trump weighing in on this. he twee
