we begin this half hour record rainfall in northern california. san francisco has received more rain this winter than it usually gets in a full year. >> and more is on the way today. pushing rivers and streams past their limits. today's storms also also bring very strong winds to the region. the result is flooding, mudslides and fallen trees. when a giant tree fell and blocked a highway in santa cruz, drivers took care of the problem themselves. one driver even pulled out a 20-inch chain saw. others had brooms. >> the latest evacuations are in san joaquin county where a levee was breached. there's a flash flood warning for the surrounding farms. there may also be flooding this afternoon in modesto, not too far from there because for the first time in years, the spillway gates have been opened at the don pedro reservoir. that will triple the flow of the tuolumne river putting it about ten feet above flood stage in modesto. abc's neal karlinksky is there with more. >> reporter: california can't catch a break, from drought to drenching, including wat

we had a disturbance coming through northern california, just enough energy, the sun is heating caused that thunderstorm to flare up. it moved across napa county and then headed towards the solano county area. we are seeing some snow mixing in with rain in the mendocino hills and also around the hills in lake county, so this is obviously colder air coming in and seeing some mixed precipitation around mt. hamilton as well. definitely a change in the weather. we're seeing a lot of sunshine but also still seeing some isolated showers. this is right across 580, castro valley area. i do want to show you a beautiful picture sent to me of spring valley hail. this is just above napa here, and you can see that hail covering the table, so don't be surprised at least until the sun goes down if you do see maybe a shower or an isolated thunderstorm producing some hail. still a possibility. we do have 1s on our storm impact scale for saturday through monday. we are tracking some more

proudly caring for northern california, birthplace of pioneers. and just a couple of hours the second week of the murder trial of garcia torres, the man accused of kidnapping and teenager sierra lamarr began. he is charged with a 2012 kidnapping and murder a 15-year- old sierra lamarr even though her body has not been found. the defense is arguing investigators mishandled evidence. and she might have run away from home. last week one of her friends testified she and sierra have plans to meet the day she disappeared. and she would never abandon her family and friends. if he is convicted garcia torres could get the death penalty or life in them -- life in prison. >>> a car late to a hit and run crash that killed a pedestrian last week has been found. it happened thursday morning on highway 101. the man who was hit died at the scene. they were able to figure out the type of car involved. based on the debris from the scene. they have not said how they were able to find that car in hayward. they have a person of interest but no arrests. >>> today the u
