to cars swallowed in a sinkhole in studio city in southern california. back here at home, in the south bay, the storm downed power lines and trees and once again this morning keeping a close eye on the rising waters of the anderson reservoir. this is what it looked like late last night. gushing water at the bottom of the anderson dam. from a relief valve for the reservoir nearing 100% capacity. it's only six inches away from flowing over the spillway for the first time in 11 years which could mean flooding in nearby creeks. >> we're out here about 26, 28 years ago, when the spillway first went over. we came out here and it looked like niagara falls. >> the latest storm toppling trees throughout the south bay like this one on park lane in santa clara. it was a close call. >> very happy that it fell to the street, because my bedroom is right there, and my partner was still in bed when it fell. so it could have been a disastrous situation. >>> and this massive eucalyptus went crashes down on park avenue and another hitting a house, crushing that pickup truc

the rainfall is moving out of southern california. we had that break for today. as we come in closer now, just lingering clouds with mostly cloudy clouds. shower activity just up to our north. and as we widen the view out here in the pacific, you can see we've got a lot of moisture to work with here so we have this continue use band of moisture right here, and it is going to work with this area. this will all be directed toward the bay area as we head towards sunday night into monday. outside right now, it is pretty quiet. you can see mostly cloudy skies. around the bay you probably noticed it is pretty brown with just a lot of debris pushing back into the bay. the water quality is not too great out there for today. the key headline is this. we're calling it the president's day storm. flooding likely. additional mudslides and damaging winds as well. this will be a big deal as we head toward monday. we'll talk more about this system coming up. this major storm in just a few minutes. >> thanks a lot, mark. >>> and the reservoir is now overflowing and sending water

southern california is bracing for another round of heavy rain today. this is just some of the damage they had to deal with over the weekend. this is a massive sinkhole that opened near studio city in los angeles, swallowing two cars. it happened around 8:30 last night. officials say it was caused by flooding. a person in one of the cars was rescued and taken to the hospital. the other car was empty when it fell in. intense rain over the weekend in southern california led to this scene in santa barbara county. a tree blocked roadways, flooded water floated cars as well. this happened in santa barbara. along the water front, at least three boats broke away from their anchors. three people are rescued during windy conditions on tomales bay. the sonoma county sheriff's helicopter team rescued the three kayakers yesterday who were stranded in choppy conditions. the three had been camping near point reyes the night before and did not anticipate the severe weather. no one was hurt, all three are expected to be okay. happening right now... hundreds of students

this morning, southern california ravaged by rain. parts of the region getting a month's worth of rain in just one day. the rain and wind proving deadly. in victorville, rescue crews discovered a person dead inside a car submerged on a flooded road. and a 55-year-old man was killed, electrocuted when a tree downed several power lines falling on top of his car. southern california is littered with trees from gusts up to 80 miles an hour. and at one point during the night, nearly 150,000 customers in los angeles with no power. gushing water careened down streets, overturning cars, and causing a rush hour washout. >> from the air, it's incredible to see how big this flood is. >> reporter: part of interstate 5, a major north/south artery, flooded. one driver tried powering through and had to be towed out. the freeway mess making for a painful sight. a massive backup for mile. in los angeles, a gaping sinkhole opened up in the middle of a residential street, swallowing two cars. both drivers are okay. in areas with already saturated hillsi

outside right now you see rain in southern california. they're going to get a bunch of rain before it's all over. scattered showers up around grass valley and chico and those areas but it's real light. not enough to do much in the watershed. for us it's dry now. after rain this morning of a quarter inch to a half inch in some places, tomorrow i think we will see about the same. neither of these have been big storms. you look outside in oakland, it does look a little inclement. there's friday morning. you see it coming up from the south. here is 8:00 a.m. so 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. that morning commute is going to be fairly wet. then you get to lunchtime. it's still pretty wet. here's where it changes around. that low starts to work its way south. what we're going to see here is some breaks. so at 5:00, that friday afternoon commute might not be too bad. i think there will be a few sprinkles but not too bad in terms of what we see in the morning. there's your saturday morning. the bay area weekend looks like we get a nice little break. the five-
