david mckenzie is in beijing and in tokyo. will, let's start with you, what's japan saying about this news that north korea is poised to deploy and mazz produce a medium range ballistic missile. ? >> well, there really is -- as we've seen condemnation, everyone from japanese prime minister, who said that he will does this with president trump at the g 7 meeting this week to japan's chief cabinet secretary who said that japan will not tolerate this kind of activity. as is often the case, this missile -- it was launched in the direction of japan and even though it didn't come as close to the japanese coast as some other launches we've seen in the past, most noticeably that simultaneous missile launch at least three missiles came within three lending an -- an area of water at the exclusive economic zone, very close to the mainland. this is still very troubling for the japanese government. >> and will, you, of course, traveled to north korea on numerous occasions. you have a unique understanding of how the leadership views the cou

mckenzie in beijing. how is china, likely, to respond to this news that it's poised to deploy and mass produce median range nuclear missile, how much pressure might it choose to apply over this? >> rosemary, it hasn't -- it's been about 24 hours since the news first came out of the latest missile test in north korea and china hasn't said anything. in fact, that is not entirely surprising because in the past when these have been tested, it kind of is china saying, well, the reaction needs to be appropriate for the action and in china's view, at least, medium range missile test, though would certainly anger the chinese, they're not likely not to rush out a statement very quickly. we're expecting to hear from them in the next hour or so at their regular briefing. this is not something that they regarded quite the same way as the south koreans here. so there really is that the chinese want to continue pressure but move any sort of increase of pressure on the north korean regime through the un security council

let's bring in international correspondent david mckenzie in beijing. david, is there any way to verify these frightening claims by kim jong-un's regime? >> reporter: well, we can verify certain aspects of these claims, ana, and it is a very disturbing and successful, it appears, missile test from pyongyang, from kim jong-un, who according to the state media personally supervised the launch of this missile. now, what we do know, what lines up between their account and experts and u.s. officials, this was a missile launch that appears to be a medium-range ballistic missile fired from northwest of the capital. it flew at a very high altitude of around 1300 miles towards the east sea, the sea of japan, and landing somewhere close-ish to russia. it has really drawn condemnation from the white house, from president trump, from the chinese, and from the russian president verpla president putin who is here in china when china is hosting this trade summit which is a slap in the face to china. >> thanks. high rates of poverty, drug addiction and sexual violence

david mckenzie is joining us by phone. david, what more can you tell us about this new projectile launch of some sort? >> well, ana, this happened just moments ago, it appears, from the eastern part of the korean peninsula, pyongyang testing yet another projectile of some kind, potentially a ballistic missile from the eastern coastline heading in an easterly direction towards japan. we don't know much at this stage but what we do know, this has been a relentless series of tests of ballistic missiles and similar military action by kim jong-un in recent weeks. despite the trump administration calling on the regime to stop these tests and calling on china to help, it seems very little at this stage can be done to try and curb these efforts. the long-term effort appears to be the regime trying to put a nuclear warhead -- or test the capability of a nuclear warhead on one of these ballistic missiles. and it is certainly having people worried in this region what we do there now. i know in the last few minutes this projectile was

david mckenzie, we've heard about south korea and japan and of course beijing could be a player in trying to thwart kim jong-un's desires with his missiles. what might we expect from beijing if this continues, david? >> reporter: certainly what the trump administration hopes is that china will use its economic leverage over north korea to try to slow or stop the progress of the north korean leadership of developing nuclear weapons. we've just got a response to this latest missile test from the chinese government. they are using very standard language on this particular test saying that they oppose any moves by north korea that break u.n. sanctions such as this and that they want all sides to get together and discuss, negotiation to try to ease the tension on the korean peninsula. but with these repeated tests like this, it seems that china's leverage as it is isn't necessarily working in slowing kim jong-un's move to develop nuclear weapons that threaten the region and beyond. and certainly that leads to questions, well, could china to more. at this stage it appears that they want to real

david mckenzie joins ame now. north korea sent a small delegation. is that surprising since we were just reporting on their brace tick missile launch here last night? >> reporter: it's surprising that they went ahead with the launch, anna, given the fact they were given this invite to this very important meeting. so it really was a slap in the face in a way to the chinese leader xi jinping. and it raised eyebrows among those in attendance. it was slammed by the russians and the chinese. but it shows that they don't appear to really care or at least publicly care what the chinese think about their missile program. >> some of the leaders attending the summit are notorious for using strong man tactics in their county. president putin, erdogan. does participating in a summit like this give them credibility? >> reporter: what it does is gives them a place where they won't be judged and certainly will be brought into the fold of the massive investment plan that xi jinping is pushing. you had the leaders getting up at the podium and putting digs at the u.s.
