this is adams mill road. you can see this is a trash truck. this is basically where everything came to an end. there was a white pickup truck that crashed into this. the while is basically down on pavement. there was a work crew, it was just about an hour ago that we were able to see the striking pickup truck being towed from the scene here. it was right in the 9:00 hour last night when this pickup came barrelling down 18th and columbia street right there at the main drag intersection here in adams morgan. it's an area that many people go to forth night life and bars. a lot of people saw and heard this impact. two d.c. police officers, they were bicycle officers, were struck and injured. we're told one was thrown some 30 feet. also, again, that transportation worker, all of them, like megan said, have been taken to the hospital. a lot of people rushed down to the bars and restaurants last night to see what had happened and they saw at least one of the officers down on the ground. let's hear from one man who is a military veteran who came to on

tim: in the heart of adams morgan, 18th and columbia. the focus point of this investigation right now, we will get about as close as we can, by the wells fargo bank on 18th street. is thete pickup truck pickup truck at the center of this investigation. it slammed into that dump truck, only after it slammed into two police officers and some pedestrians. all of those people were taken to the hospital, including the driver of the white truck, in critical condition. of the two police officers hit, one is in critical condition, the other is in serious condition. the police chief and mayor are on their way or already at the hospital and will be briefing us shortly about the details of this case. according to witnesses, this happened at about 9 p.m. people were walking along 18 street, eating outside. when theice night, pickup truck slammed into some people along including a lady walking across the street, then sped up the street and crashed into the dump truck. we talked to a doctor who rushed over and he said the passenger of the pickup truck

transportation reporter adam tuss joins us live with a look at what happened. adam? >> reporter: eun, good morning. the crash is gone but the aftermath still here. let me show you what happened here. a car obviously going at a high rate of speed these poles are so strong, you have to imagine it was going at a really height rate of speed. we don't have all the details of the crash right now. but the speed limit here on silver hill road is 35 miles an hour. so to hit a pole like that and snap it in half, it had to be going pretty fats. look at the video from overnight that we saw of the car flipped over on its side. this was a serious crash here. one person dead unfortunately. silver hill road shut down. the eastbound lanes have been open for some time. at least one lane is now getting by westbound. but pepco crews are out here now because there were wires down on the road and the state highway administration will have to look at the road as well. if you're coming through the area, it's not marking -- you could hit a backup as you come through this area and the investi
