the reporter for the "huffington post" joins me. i'm reminded the most fallow period in the health care negotiations were when people were not paying attention. that's when the deals got struck. as someone who has been following this so closely, how would you describe the state of play right now? >> well, everything old is new again. it does have the same sort of feeling to it, i guess, in the house. it seem a little bit dead. obamacare is the law of the land. the only difference between the house and the senate was you had mark meld owes and tom mcarthur, conservatives really working with, not the other side of the aisle certainly but on the other side of their own conference. they were working with each other trying to figure out how to get to yes. certainly people like mark meld owes and people in the freedom caucus didn't want to be the ones who spoiled the party. a lot of them wanted that same thing. i'm not sure it is the sail in the senate. it was of much more concern among conservatives and among the caucus and the party. i

i look at a huffington post headline, how slavery led to modern capitalism. daily beast, how slavery gave capitalism its start. >> the best i can figure, john, is people want -- a lot of people don't like capitalism, so if you can tarnish it by claiming it somehow was connected with slavery, it makes it look bad. in history where slavery exists, capitalism doesn't exist. it's no coincidence that great written, the home of the -- great britain, the home of the industrial revolution, was one of the first countries to get rid of slavery. brazil, on the other hand, didn't get rid of slavery until 1888, and it's still a lot poorer than, certainly, most people in the united states and western europe. john: and america didn't really prosper until after the civil war when slavery was ended. >> decades after slavery was ended, yes. john: one of your points is slavery is not as efficient as people would think it would be. >> that's right. slavery is efficient for very, very mechanical tasks; growing tobacco and growing cotton. if you're a plantation owner, you might do

i want to point to you to a piece in the huffington post that reports that $50,000 was paid to donald trump jr.'s criminal defense lawyer 11 days before that "new york times" story broke. are you troubled by the way these events are heading? it certainly looks like the trump campaign was concerned that there was legal jeopardy for trump jr. >> i don't believe for a moment there is a criminal case here. i do believe that there is a lot of razzle-dazzle as you pointed out. i'm not happy about the fact that russians are involved in anything -- in any way what happens with an american election. i think the high dungeon that you expressed and making this into a major case is a distraction from the policy agenda of the trump administration. and i'm not necessarily defenderst trump team. my feeling is that what you overlooked is the fact that we've made significant strides since donald trump has been president. and that has been overlooked largely because this is a distraction notwithstanding your claim to the contrary. it is a distraction from the kind of policy agenda that i think we shoul

joining me now, senior political reporter for the huffington post. and the white house columnist at the hill. good to see you both. we'll go ladies first. as the president's personal attorney, he's been saying the president had no knowledge at all of his son's meeting until he saw the news reports. do you think the president has plausible deniability here? >> not really. what are the chances that the president didn't know his own campaign manager, his son and son-in-law were going to meet with a lawyer connected to the russian government with potential dirt on hillary clinton. it was obviously a badly run campaign. if things were happening right under his nose and he had no idea. either way, it looks bad for him. >> i'm curious what you think the strategy is behind sekulow. he's talking about this repeatedly on the talk shows. is that wise? >> i think it's pretty clear what's going on here, a lex, and that jay sekulow and the president himself and his allies are sort of furiously pumping up the smoke machine to obscure the central truth of what happe

joining me now republican strategist christopher metzler, jonathan cone of the huffington post, and tommy binion, director of congressional relations for the heritage foundation. i'm going to start with you, tommy, and dispense with this idea of just repealing altogether obamacare because that would send the entire market into chaos, right? >> i don't think so. i think the markets would respond the way we expect a free market to respond. we know that free markets bring competition between firms when they're competing for your business, they're going to offer a better product at a lower price. part of the reasons premiums have gone up so high is because of obamacare. i expect premiums to get a lot cheaper if obamacare were to be repealed. i think what we're seeing from the president with that tweet, with his statement that if repeal and replace doesn't happen, he's still committed to keeping his campaign promise. president trump is absolutely committed to keeping that promise and all of his campaign promises. but no, i don't think that we should expect the insurance markets to collapse. >>
