confederate monuments in baltimore are taken down. residents stood by as crews removed statues of robert e. lee, thomas stonewall jackson and others. and at saint john's church in brooklyn new york a longstanding plaque dedicated to general lee was removed wednesday. the chaos in charlottesville virginia has sparked a nationwide debate over statues plaques and memorials bearing the name of figures from the confederate era. the main argument for is that they're reminders of slavery. one chicago historian says he understands calls for the mayor to rename washington park but he thinks the debate should be about learning. >> i think some of these monuments could be recontextualize so it's an opportunity for people to learn. >> reporter: others oppose the idea of removal. >> we allow people to make up their own mind, what they mean to them. >> reporter: meanwhile residents of lexington kentucky spoke about the issue at a city council meeting to debate taking down statues of john breckenridge and general john hunt morgan. >> let's pretend t
