bay area with good news. those folks are allowed to go back to homes. the mandatory evacuations lifted. let's show you the pictures from sky ranger you can see what we are talking about. all it started as a small vegetation fire around 2:00 this afternoon and grew. spreading out over hilly terrain as the winds picked up. the mandatory evacuations followed. at the time the folks leaving homes thought it looked dire. here is what they had to say. >> it looked a lot closer than i think it was. it was a little hard to tell. but definitely very scarey. >> to hear the helicopters, and in two minutes i have seen like six fire trucks coming from all over, not just dublin but you can see them but basically smoke. >> reporter: the fire chief says some of the area drops helped in all of this. in fact they had dozens of crews on the ground and that really helped, the people power if getting it again 75% containment at this point. we are told the crews stay in place for several hours and some overnight to make sure they k

area on the first flights this morning to find connection to the bay area. cheryl, we know you landed a few hours ago whachlt are some of the stories you are hearing? >> reporter: right now we are live outside the mandalay bay, as you can see. but what you can't see is the building is surrounded by police officers. streets are blocked off and it will be that way for a while. people are walking around in a daze. many of them telling me that they are lucky to be alive after last night's massacre. >> a rapid fire coming from the 32nd floor of the las vegas hotel. the shooter pointing down to the crowd of 32,000 people, concert goers scrambling for cover. here is a bay area that was outside the hotel. >> sounded like big firecrackers. and at that point, because they were too fast, coming too fast, and it lasted for at least 20 seconds. and then stopped for about 10 or 15. and then multiple bursts that lasted almost about ten minutes. >> reporter: people desperate to find cover. >> then brought everybody up into my room because they stayed either the mandalay bay

area, especially the north bay. monk temperatures 40s and 50s, we'll see high temperatures tomorrow at their warmest of the next seven days. check out thinks temperatures around san jose, upper 80s south of downtown, maybe close to 90 in morgan hill. notice the humidity here, still very dry. 13% in the east bay, except not dealing with strong, gusty winds but certainly dry and warm for monday. peninsula temperatures in the 80s. san francisco again climbing close to 80 degrees, dry there too. so big changes coming up once we pass monday as we lose high pressure, replace it with an early season fall storm. we'll begin to see cooling changes right there thursday. at this point right now looks like the thursday evening commute into friday morning finally seeing rain, higher humidity levels and temperatureses about 20 degrees cooler for a couple of days. good news. rainfall totals right now as things stand, some of the hilltops here in the north bay maybe up storts mount st. helena along the fire lines, the area in blue,

right in the bay area. meteorologist rob mayeda is tracking the air when we get relief rob. >> we see some of the worst air quality in the south bay. unhealthy for all groups from the north bay down the coast into santa cruz parts of the south bay and just on the northern end of the santa clara valley. earlierier today it was dangerous levels of air pollution up in napa. we went to purple on the map. this is the air quality index. we have to get into the orange you see for a spare the air day to be declared. once we move to red or purple indicating dense areas of smoke. check out san francisco right now. starting to see improving air quality. the view shows a return of low clouds. as the sea breeze picks up that's bringing in cooler air. but we think better news for smoke pollution heading the next 24 hours. you can see it's socked in around the bay. overnight as the on shore winds pick up we see more smoke pushed away from the bay area. one of the changes over the next 48 hours. a little less smoke cooling

all around the bay area it is amazing how cold it was this morning. in north bay dipping down into the upper 30s. then as we take a live look outside in san francisco golden gate bridge and a lot of people walking across the bridge and enjoying all of this sunshine. not much abreast as of now. looking live from mount hamilton over the south bay see the sunshine. and look at the reservoir morgan hill is such a beautiful day. you may still need some long sleeves. look at how cool it is forbe much of the bay area. right now only in the low 60s. but check out the north bay in 76 in santa rosa and napa struggling to warm-up. and temperatures have been running 10 to 15 degrees cooler than where we were 24 hours ago but definitely big cool down we are feeling as the winds are lightning up getting cool air into the bay area. high temperatures warming up nicely into the low 80s for napa, while oakland will be up to 72 degrees, palo alto looking at a high of 80 degrees today. still a lot more work to be done, but we will see the highs in livermore today up to 8
