. >> reporter: they are focusing on several spots here on bennett lane. where the tubbs fire was first reported. now here is the spot where standing in front of crime scene tape surrounds a pg&e power pole there and also what appears to be a transformer casing. these are some of the items investigators are looking at as they search for a cause. >> this was pretty much what started. there was a big north wind and sent everything over to santa rosa. >> jim and pat pence say it's scarey to think the deadly fire may have started in their neighborhood. the calistoga couple says fire investigators have been on bennett lab lane since the fire started. several areas are cordoned off and a security guard has been watching the area around the clock. >> the fire starts somewhere if it starts here like i say it's a scarey situation. >> crime scene tape is up around a power pole and what looks like a canister from a transformer. cal fireway only confirm the fire was reported near bennett lane and tubbs lane. as investigators look for the cause, firefighters are still

we are tracking evacuations in the bennett valley including mountain ridge road and enterprise road and we'll give you a live report in 30 minutes. >> here's a closer look at the wildfires burning tonight in sonoma county, the nun fire threatening the oakmont area where j.r. has been reporting all evening. that fire is also near highway 12 north of glen ellen which is about 10 miles east of santa rosa. ridge state pa the crane also in that area the sugar loaf ridge state park down to the crane creek regional park. the tubbs fire is one of the most destructive. that is the fire that went across highway 101 in santa rosa damaging so many homes and businesses. it has burned roughly 27,000 acres. there is no containment tonight. 550 homes have been destroyed and 21 commercial buildings have been burned. >> tonight in sonoma county the sheriff says that they are looking into 183 reports of missing persons, but there's some good news here. they've got a special group searching for missing persons. they found 54 in the course of just this day. >> yeah. and that team is devoted to finding peopl

right now, we're on bennett valley in santa rosa. and usually you can use this road to go south and meet back up with highway 12. but the roads have been blocked off as these ranches and farms and vineyards catch fire. that smoke is the line of fire getting closer to this area. when we were here at 7 a.m. that line was way up the hill. since then it's coming down the hill and burned it completely. some gates were left open for cows to escape from this ranch and petaluma fire was clearing vegetation around trees near the front lines to prevent them from going up in flames. people are still underestimating just how fast this fire is moving and urging people to leave now. >> my advice is g traffic bad in the county. if we have to evacuate, be better to have an area to go. the less people here and the less people we have to evacuate the better off we'll be. >> reporter: this is part of the nuns fire off highway 12 north of glen ellen. as of 10 a.m., cal fire reports that it's taking over an area of about 7600 acres and it's only 2% conta

ktvu's ann rubin is at the intersection of grange road and bennett valley road outside santa rosa. what's the latest from where you are? >> reporter: firefighters have been working hard to save the homes here along bennett valley road but the fire has been bearing down all day and we have seen a lot more smoke in the hills here over the last hour. >> all day fire has been working its way down this hillside in bennett valley. >> we have two homes that are adjacent to me and these fuels are very, very dry. >> reporter: on the ground a strike team is in place, crews are working to scrape away as much fuel as possible. above, a cal fire chopper makes path after path. >> we would hope the weather would cooperate with us but right now it's getting extreme again. >> reporter: firefighters said conditions were good today and this fire above a winery has been moving slowly but later that will change as the winds pick up. >> we are very aware that we'll have a 180-degree shift in the winds. so that's why it's good now that this fire is doing what it's doing, taking out the fuel that would be

they are rescue horses living on the mcdonald property off bennett valley road. the flames started getting close to the farm so when word got out on facebook, volunteers evacuated the horses. many had no prior experience dealing with horses. >> you have never handled a horse before? >> never before. and as is probably have evident from the footage over there. [ laughter ] >> the skittish horses finally agreed to get into the trailers. several private land owners are offering their properties to shelter livestock while these fires are burning. >>> planes are not moving in the santa rosa airport because of no electricity at the terminal. they have backup generators to run the control tower, but they can't accommodate any passengers without power. >>> a bay area company is helping out a little girl who lost everything in the fire. >> a 9-year-old santa rosa girl named lily lost everything including her wheelchair and her prosthetic legs. she and her mother had left their home sunday in their pajamas thinking they would return in just a few minutes. but when they hea

that's where the next set of homes are being evacuated in bennett valley. the next threat for this growing fire. again, oak mont is an older retirement community. the issue was, this thick black smoke that's encroaching at the back of oakmont near white oak drive. another issue is the residential streets. if there are cars on those streets, emergency vehicles wouldn't be able to get around. here's what one sergeant with santa rosa police told me a short time ago. >> we're in life saving measures. we're trying to get as many people out of area as possible. trying on keep the roads open for fire and the emergency service apparatus so they can get in without delay in order to deal with the fire encroaching on the back side of oakmont. >> reporter: again, i cannot emphasize this enough. talking on santa rosa police officers. this is a mandatory evacuation for oakmont. i've been talking with a lot of our viewers over twitter, who have parents that are in this area. some parents haven't been able to reach out to. we've been able to coordinate with people on socia
