cnn's dan simon with more. >>reporter: this fire has been so explosive, pushed by the high winds at one point the fire gusting to 40 to 50 miles per hour. take a look at this one neighborhood. this is the sky view neighborhood in santa rosa, california. devastation as far as the yoo i can see. you can see some of the burned out vehicles. the fire smoldering here but we're told the fire is still active in certain places. crews doing whatever they can to get the blaze under control. we're told buy the fire official that the fire activity is outpacing any resource they can throw at it. we've seen so much devastation. i saw a mcdonalds that burned to the ground, a furniture store, a hotel. a kmart. really, it's just unbelievable. at this point, 20,000 people or so have been evacuated. two hospitals actually had to be evacuated. they took the patients south towards san francisco to get them to safety. hopefully the weather cooperated and crews will be able to get the upper hand on this blaze. but for now things stil

cnn's leyla santiago has more. >>reporter: christine and alex, the fbi now wants more answers on this. they have opened a preliminary inquiry to find out more about that $300 million deal between whitefish energy and puerto rico's power authority. now the governor is still standing by his decision to call for the termination of that contract. he says he has no evidence of any wrongdoing but he says this is all become a district shn. a distraction, he say said because of controversy. many have questioned how a 2-year-old company based out of montana with very few employees landed such a big deal with such big responsibilities to restore puerto rico's power grid. i got to tell you, as we were out and about, talking to people today, we definitely sensed the frustration. we even talked to somebody contractors of white fish and they tell us they're frustrated because of what any believe are politics getting in the way of what they believe are delays in the progress and for so many on this island, a 3.5 million u.s. citi

sources tell cnn the u.s. teams split up when they came under fire in an effort to counterattack, but the two groups eventually lost communication. the patrol was described as outnumbered and outgunned by dozens of isis-linked fighters. david, what more can you tell us about the ambush? what are you learning? >> well, george, the ambush happened some weeks ago, but only details coming out now, those dramatic details that you described that this u.s.-led, in fact, green ba ray let consingent of led contingent. they split and one group of those u.s. soldiers got split up and couldn't, in fact, communicate directly with their counterparts. several moved out of this ek vehicle to try and flank the isis-led militants in that fire fight. we know how this all ended up, four u.s. soldiers dead, a number of them wounded and nigerian counterparts led in what is still an open investigation into exactly what happened and why these american soldiers went into this danger zone with what appears to be light support. george.

first on cnn, the problem into the russia meddling in the 2016, sources tell cnn a federal grand jury has approved the first charges in this case. >> and special counsel robert mueller is leading the investigation. he is focusing on potential collusion between the two trump campaign and russia as well as obstruction of justice, by the president. and cnn has reported that mueller and investigators on capitol hill are scrutinizing trump and his associates financial ties to russia. our justice correspondent pamela brown helped break the story. she has more. >> reporter: it is unclear what the charges are because as i pointed out, the indictment is still under seal and it is not clear whether those under indictment have been notified. a spokesperson for the special counsel office declined to comment for this. but as we've been reporting, mueller was appointed in may to lead this investigation into russian meddling in the 2016 u.s. election, and under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, rod rosin stein would be made aware of any charges before they were taken before t

but cnn has started to report in the last few minutes, citing two sources familiar with the matter, cnn is now reporting that the robert mueller special counsel investigation has produced its first criminal charges i would elaborate further on what cnn is reporting but that really is all they're reporting. this is not confirmed by nbc news or by any other news organization at this point. so this is just cnn's work. they're saying that a federal grand jury in washington, d.c. today approved the first charges in the investigation that's being led by the special counsel by mueller. now, we don't know what the charges are. the charges are apparently still sealed under orders of a federal judge. we don't know who the charges are against and we don't even know what the charges are. we don't have any reason to believe any of they will have been notified of the fact that they have been charged, if in fact these charges are still under seal. so the headline is very provocative. we know very little beyond that. other than prosecutors associated with the mueller investigation were seen entering th

cnn's stephanie elom joins me now live from las vegas. stephanie, how much closer does this assist investigators in figuring out his motive? >> it doesn't really help on that end, fredricka. what we understand is that these numbers were the distance and trajectory that the calculation from the 32nd floor window where the shooter was to shoot down into that crowd in the concert venue. that's what they believe these numbers were. no other words, just the final numbers of the calculations were found on that note pad. and obviously been chasing down thousands of leads they said and they still do not know why this man would have done this. so, they are asking the public if you know anything to speak up. if you had any interaction with this man to let them know about it, even if you thought it was something that was just trivial, they're saying let the police decide if it's trivial or not and reach out to them so they can help piece together a time line of what may have led the 64-year-old to do what he did. >> stephanie elam in las vegas, than

cnn's jim sciutto has more. >> reporter: cnn has learned that the company of prigozhi n,a russian oligarch dubbed "chef" financed a russian troll factory that used social media to spread fake news during the 2016 presidential campaign. this according to multiple officials briefed on the investigation. he is one of the kremlin's inner circle. he catered birthday parties that was attended by president george h.w. bush. a secretive technology firm created and distributed fake news. he was sanctioned by the u. s. treasury department in december 2016 but this for providing foreman support for russia's military occupation of ukraine. my colleagues and i examined scores of documents leaked from the companies. the monthly budget was around $1 million in 2013. that's every month. split between russian language operations and the use of social media in english. one part of that factory had a really intriguing name. it was called "department of provocations dedicating to sowing fake news in the west. its mission, as stated in those documents was, "how do we create news items to achieve our goals?" se
