talk about what kasie talked about. raising eyebrows over the tax plan with these comments last night. listen carefully. >> so they borrowed more than $10 trillion. right? and yet we picked up $5.2 trillion just in the stock market, possibly picked up the whole thing in terms of the first nine months, in terms of value. so you could say in one sense we're really increasing values and maybe in a sense we are reducing debt. >> dude, no. that's now how it works. that is an erroneous claim by the president of the united states. for facting sake, increases in the stock market have absolutely no connection to the debt. first of all, let us define what we're talking about here. debt is what the government owes based on its spending. the only way to reduce debt is increase revenue. how? either raise taxes or you have really strong economic growth, or you reduce spending. that's it. those are the only ways. it's got nothing to do with the stock market, president trump, or anybody who works for president trump who's listening to

congratulations, kasie. so excited to welcome you to the weekends. what is the dynamic at work here as you see it? trump suddenly palling around on the golf course with two critical senators. what is the angle for each of them? >> well, alex, we have seen a couple of senators succeed at building a relationship with president trump in a variety of different ways. rand paul is somebody that has been somewhat of an antagonist, obviously, he threatened to vote against the renewed push to repeal obamacare, for example. he urged the president to sign that executive order allowing the sale of insurance plans across state lines and what critics would say undermined the affordable care act further. but he is a potential no vote on the big budget fiscal spending deal coming up at the end of the year. and so there is kind of a divide between the white house and republicans in congress as far as the thinking about how rand paul might come down on that. the president seems to think he can potentially win him over. that may be what this is about. lindsey graham is

kasie hunt, thank you. as that tax plan is worked out in congress, the president claims cutting corporate taxes would give americans a $4,000 pay raise. but for fact's sake, is that true? here's my buddy stephanie rhule. >> president trump is making a big promise to americans. thousands of dollars extra in their paychecks every year by drastically slashing corporate tax rates. that comes from a new study published by the president's council economic advisers. cutting tax rates from 35% to 20% will boost wages substantially depending on where you are on the income ladder, he says the boost will add anywhere between $4,000 to 9,000 bucks a year. but does his math add up? economists on the right, it's an article of faith that lower taxes on businesses and the wealthy reap benefits that trickle down to the rest of us. they argue the extra money the companies get to keep increases demand for workers and drives up wages. but history shows us that cutting corporate taxes does not guarantee higher wages. back in th

joining me now is nbc national correspondent peter alexander and capitol hill correspondent kasie hunt. first you, peter. this falls short of what the president promised only a week ago. why? >> reporter: the bottom line is that the white house doesn't believe a national state of emergency, declaring that would be the right fit for what they're trying to do right now which they view as a long-term problem. had they gone that route, that would be similar to what they've done in the cases of hurricanes and tornadoes where they open up access to the federal disaster relief fund. what this does, instead it's a public health emergency right now, and the intention here is to do a variety of things. among them to try to waive regulations to give more states more flexibility in terms of the way they use federal funds and also to expand access to telemedicine which would specifically target those people in more isolated areas like appalachia where they could see doctors remotely over computer ports and be treated in that way where in the past they had relied on in-person visits to get prescribe

what did we miss at the top there, kasie? >> reporter: i think that you caught the gist of it. >> okay. >> reporter: at the very top of our conversation i had asked him about the comments and the back and forth between the president, president trump and, of course, the family of sergeant johnson, and that conversation, and whether or not it was appropriate for the president to be talking about that the way he has, and senator graham essentially had a two-prong message saying on the first that he believes president trump has the military's and our service members best interests at heart and cares deeply about them. but he also said that attempting to bring president obama and question president obama's motives or whether or not he acted appropriately towards the families of service members who were killed was not appropriate. and he thought that was a distraction. so i thought that was -- significant comments from senator graham here. he is, of course, somebody who developed a relationship with the president. he's been golfing

kimberly st r assel, heather mcghee, and kasie hunt. and dan ball, chief correspondent for "the washington post." before you get into t i'm going to start the conversation this way. let's take a look at the criticism of president trump. we've been hearing a lot these days, but it's all coming from folks who would normally be supportive of a conventional republican president. bob corker used the phrase heading towards world war iii. peggy noon an, something's going. tantrum as governance. and even the president's close friend, he's better than this. dan, you called it governing by cattle prod. what is happening? it feels like we're in another level of republican concern about the president. >> well, you know, i think you could argue it's another level. i think it's a continuing level. i think this comes and goes. there are moments when something happens and i think you have to give senator corker the responsibility for ratcheting it up this week for what happened a week ago today in the tweets. what we've seen from the president both on

look, there are really important issues behind the scenes, kasie. we're moving into a crisis situation with north korea. the armed forces are trying to get ready for it. the secretary of defense told the men and women of the united states army two weeks ago, get ready to go to war if north korea doesn't give up those nuclear armed missiles. and so this is a really serious situation and what we're seeing here and the reason i think john mccain said what he said about this shouldn't be the national dialogue, it's painful. it's terrible what happened. we all feel badly for the -- for mrs. johnson and for the loss of those soldiers and their families but we also have really important things that need to be in the national dialogue that the american people need to understand before we launch into another fight, a terrible potential war in a far off land. >> trying times indeed. general wesley clark, thank you for taking the time today. appreciate it. >> thank you. >>> coming up, call for unity. all five former presidents come together. that's right here

kasie hunt is on the hill for us. all this comes with the backdrop of the president out on this budget blitz right now talking tax reform, really doing the full-court press with his administration, doing these interviews to try to move the ball forward. will it happen? >> reporter: hallie, i think the president is essentially trying to set congress up for the fall here. he is essentially sending them issue after issue after issue and saying, hey, you take care of this, you do this while essentially not taking any of the blame himself. and you know, congress isn't making it any easier on themselves necessarily. the strategy we have seen from mitch mcconnell is to do being things with republican votes and losing just one too many of those votes. and it's causing basically a war inside the republican party. you have steve bannon out there trying to primary a lot of the republican incumbents. and here in washington, you have the president's cabinet very frustrated with the pace of the senate. now, i will say, this is not

>> kasie hunt on capitol hill. as the congressman we were just talking to said, there are two spaces of cover one can seek to avoid having the difficult conversation that needs to be had. one is their condolences and the prayers and all that which are necessary and important, but they do give you cover for not having to go further and saying what you'll do. and the second one, while crucial, and bipartisan, the discussions on mental health, they do, again, they can prevent you from going forward and saying, but what about sensible gun control issues. and there are some people for whom the words gun and control in the same sentence are not sensible and cannot possibly be sensible and are against the constitution and are against the second amendment. but polling shows that is not most americans who think that. >> but smart gun control is like smart regulation. so many people want that part of the conversation and they want those changes to happen. and you hope at a time like this people at least could open their mind

so let's go to kasie for a second here. actually, it's probably not pointless in the fact that donald trump is trying to get the democrats' attention. saying, you want to work together, we're going to have to work together, but i'm going to -- he's following through on exactly what he said he was going to do. he said he was going to defund obamacare. he said he would do everything he could to kill obamacare and drks are going to have to come work with him to come up with a plan. it doesn't sound like they're in the mood to do that right now. >> i think the president has made it difficult for them on some other fronts, immigration, other places. >> impossible, right. >> republicans have defended these payments in the last couple of months. you had republican leaders, lamar alexander, john thune, coming out saying, hey, let's leave these where we are while we try to figure this out. i actually think this move also, it continues in this theme of the president putting pressure on republicans in congress who he is increasingly b
