ken wayne up in petaluma for us tonight. ken, thank you. >>> the smoke is certainly bad but it almost feels odd to complain about the smoke given that so many people have lost their homes and everything in them. i guess the key thing tonight, bill, is the red flag warning in effect and the wind. what's the situation? >> well, the good news is the red flag warnings are going to be dropped in the next hour or so am so that's good news. last night, the other good news is what we talked about right here last night. the red flag warning last night, it was up but the winds never really materialized to the point that we're being forecast. not by us but by officials. winds were about 25 to 30 last night. that's very good news, not 50. firefighters getting an upper hand -- not an upper hand but more of a hand, which is great news, and as you look at the -- the plume of smoke, you can kind of see what we're tracking here, that smoke out of the north bay and the air quality certainly an issue around here. red flag warning not in effect

after that it does look okay from santa rosa to petaluma. there's not been much of a commute in this area as people have been asked to stay off the roads and people have been doing that. traffic has been very light. highway 128 in and out of calistoga is still closed northwest of calistoga and highway 128 in the lake areas that area is still closed for fire at city. let's move to the commute on 580 westbound, altamont pass. traffic is a little slow after 205 toward livermore. more traffic -- no major traffics on interstate 880 and in the east bay can you. highway 24 has opened. we had some trouble overnight in the caldecott tunnel. all the tunnels are open. the westbound bay bridge, traffic is light with a few lanes a little congested. >>> we do have a better smoke advisory forecast compared to the last couple of days. the wind has tailed off. temperatures are colder. yesterday, we had very unhealthy levels. this make it worse again tomorrow because the breeze will pick up. cool, clear, hazy and 30s and 40s on the temperatures. breezy evenin

they wanted people to go to petaluma, novato, just anywhere to get away from this area. they have evacuation centers set up there for a lot of people to get there. >> this includes so many homes, hundreds of homes, thousands of people potentially affected. it is the area to the north and to the south of highway 12 from kenwood to east santa rosa. for people who can't get out, if you don't have a car, if you don't have any way to get out of town, there is a bus or a set of buses stationed at the safeway at calistoga road and highway 12. but also, we were talking to the sheriff's office of sonoma county. they told us if you can't get out, they will come to you. they are so determined to get people into safety, they will come to you and help you save yourself. they want people to go as marcus said west on highway 12, south on 101, go as far as novato and petaluma. they don't want people heading just the next town over. they need people to evacuate farther south. >>> now what you're looking at on your screen is the first mandatory evacuation that was called this morning. thi

live in petaluma, david louie, abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. >> a brother and sister who helped rescue dozens of elderly residents are demanding answers from a senior living center in santa rosa. they want to know where were the employees. reporter melanie woodrow. >> reporter: these are pictures of flames devouring the oakmont senior living community on fountain grove parkway in santa rosa. around 3:30 monday morning, rj went to check on his grandfather, a resident in the main building. >> when i walked in and saw the people, i -- and the looks on their faces, i knew i needed to be the answer. >> he says there were two women in the lobby who he assumed were employees. >> they said are you the fire department? >> he quickly discovered his grandfather wasn't in his room, but dozens of elderly residents were in their rooms, many behind locked doors. back in the lobby, he said the two women he thinks were employees were now gone. he called his wife who called 911. when the fire department arrived, cislg insisting the firefighters broke down doors where they found more residents sleeping.

in addition, there are evacuation centers open by the city of petaluma, petaluma community center. >> and we've been hearing and seeing people who are basically just running out of the area to get out quickly, these fires moving in quickly. hopefully they have a cell phone. is there a central number they can call if they have no idea where to go and they're out driving at this point? . >> so really, if you do have a cell phone, the best thing to do -- actually, we have a red cross app that has shelter locations. whether or not they are a red cross shelter. you can open that up as well as all the emergency managers and red cross are tweeting updates and posting updates on facebook. so it's a great way to get that information, the most current information, is to follow your local emergency manager, in particular county of sonoma has nixol, which is a way they push out updates. sonoma county residents are encouraged to register for that to get the latest updates about evacuations. >> anytime there's an emergency, that's a god spot to register ahead of time, for everybody to know that. do

the rest of 101 looks okay from santa rosa to petaluma. highway 37 is open this morning all the way through. we've had some closures on some of the other local roads in the fire area. northbound one-to-one from gilroy to san jose does not look too bad. traffic is moving along relatively well driving through. there have been no major issues . westbound 580 as you drive on the altamont pass, you will see traffic is slow. also 1205 this morning, slow. we are getting normal slowing we get this time of morning from people coming in from tracy to livermore. after that, things are okay. no major issues. >>> good morning. we have some good weather coming our way and will help

petaluma are a makeshift home for hundreds of evacuees. >> david louie live in petaluma now. david. >> reporter: well, larry and kristen, they're insisting we weary face masks so we're complying. the challenge for evacuees at the fairgrounds and they don't know when or if they're going home anytime soon. this is their home for now. earlier in the week, there were 300 of them here. now, that census figure is down to 235. one of the evacuees here is liz costa, who works for the state and was forced from her home in santa rosa. she's here with a coworker and friend in search of necessities since he left home with nothing. this part of the fairgrounds looks like a big box store organized by volunteers by category of goods. donationvise come in nonstop all week, and supplies are being shared with some of the other shelters in the area that might be short of certain items. >> i don't know about my home yet. but you know, there's such great support around. everybody is just being wonderful. you couldn't ask for better folks. and we're so grateful for places like this. >> short dista

it's just outside of petaluma. the coast guard members came out. these are people going through the cooking school that the coast guard has out there. and at that cooking school, they learn how to take their skills back to their bases when they get their assignments. these men and women haven't even gone through cooking school yet. they just started. and here they are getting some on-the-job training cooking dinners on their own time for these evacuees here. we talked to the master chief petty officer who is also a volunteer about why they came out. >> some of us are most affected by it want to help out . rice, beans and chickens with lovely tomato sauce and a salad and we are making what we call a dump cake. it's an old boy scout camp trick. we take fruit and cake mix and adding to together. the kids will love it. >> reporter: you know, that sense of urgency with the firefighters out there on the front lines, battling the fires. you almost get the sense that there's that same type of feeling here from the volunteers that they really want to do eve

sausalito 87, petaluma 87, santa rosa 89, napa 88, cloverdale 91, clear lake 82. i want to show you this good news. by wednesday night into thursday we will have green on the screen with a good amount of rain coming in the form of up to three 3/10 of an inch. this will be impacting the north bay first and then working into san francisco bringing us a chance of showers with drizzle. we will notice this by thursday into friday with possible lingering rain friday morning. >>> today the town of big sur is no longer cut off. the fight for the canyon bridge is now opened. the bridge along highway 1 is the main route into the town. the town had been cut off since february but here is the ribbon- cutting ceremony on the new bridge. trucks cars and bikes were allowed through. many businesses are happy that tourists can finally have a way in. >> i can smile now because everything is under control. >> a close call in marin county were neighbors came together to fight another fire.>>> sending help to northern california. just how far some crews have come to tackle the flames.

all i hear are sirens in petaluma. another gentleman who follows us on social media and a faithful viewer said he heard my story about my parents and his mom is going around taking pictures of their house before they possibly have to evacuate. so they will have documentation of all of the stuff that's in their house. just a quick recap. my parents' house burned down two years ago. two years later and they're still trying to get all of their stuff replaced and their lives back in order. it gives you an idea what they're going through. that's a winery from earlier this morning. and you can see the winds just fanning the flames. that's what i wanted to start with when we go back to the graphics. it is cleaner but the air quality is still brutally bad. let me show you just how bad it is. in the north bay it's severe. that's the highest level. i haven't seen that in more than a decade. the coast and central bay which means the coast and central bay which is the entire san francisco bay near the water unhealthy. inland east

let's talk about where the thickest smoke is, petaluma, napa, a 4-mile visibility. a light northwest wind across the golden gate. breezes, fire danger taper today but come back tomorrow. that chance of rain coming into the north bay starting as early as wednesday. for temperatures today, we'll be around 72 to 75 in the north bay. inland east bay and south bay. about 68 to 72 around the bay and about 62 to 64 at the coast into san francisco. so definitely a cooler day out there for the firefighters and for you. tonight even cooler than this morning. we could have some 30s up in the north bay in the deepest valleys. most of us in the 40s until you get to san francisco at 51. it would be great to open up the windows and air the house out with this cooler air but don't do that, there's too much smoke in the air. here's a look at our forecast. tomorrow it's going to become calm in the morning and becoming windy in the afternoon through the evening hours and into saturday morning. the winds will relax saturday and allow a warming trending. winds will start blowing offshor
