joining us ron allen. ron, good to have you back with us. bring us up to speed on the investigation. what leads, if any, do police have to work off of, and do we know anything new about the suspect himself, stephen paddock? >> reporter: well, they've got all these weapons they're going to trace. they'll figure out where they were purchased, who sold them to this individual. there's the explosive material, where did that come from? they're looking at his companion, a woman described as his girlfriend, 62 years old. we believe they lived together for some time. what did she know about the arsenal in their home, and did she know anything? earlier at a briefing the authorities said she was not a suspect or they didn't think she was involved because they said they believed that paddock acted alone, but they haven't ruled out anything at this point. it's so early. it's only 24 hours or so into this investigation of this massacre, this disaster. so they're also just trying to figure out why this individual would do this. he was completely under the

let's bring in ron brownstein. let's just start with the politics of all this. as you can hear congresswoman wilson was in no mood, it sounded like to me to take a conciliatory tone. she wasn't backing down in this sort of public spat that she's having with general kelly and with the president. she heard what she heard. she's interpreting it the in the way she thinks is right and so hard to know where we go from here. >> i agree and the president -- the president's ability to let things lie when they should has been pretty limited. he usually puts out fires with gasoline so where this goes in that sense is unclear. i do think there is one thing that she said that does point to where it may go which is the questions about what exactly happened. and the desire for more transparent answers on what exactly occurred i think is going to get louder. whatever else gold star families are owed by the president, by their government, they are owed a clear understanding of what happened to their loved one. i don't think we have that yet and i don't think moore in congress, e

i have many good friends, ron included amongst them, who've worked on democratic campaigns. there is no person i know on either republican campaigns or democratic campaigns had they gotten a call and approach from an official of the russian intelligence services or the russian government who offered to give dirt on the opponent wouldn't have immediately, immediately reported it up the chain of command inside the campaign and gone immediately to the fbi. it is extraordinary, the lack of understanding or the blindness from so many in the republican party as this issue's been covered over the year. this was never an attack on the democratic party. this is an attack on our elections process, thus it's an attack on the united states by a foreign adversary. and the republican response to this has been appalling. and the complicity and the echoing of the misinformation campaign and the type of misinformation that takes place in no healthy democracy anywhere in the world deserves to be commented on and deserves torre krim nated. >> ron, you have worked in campaigns you might be some

ron, thank you. >> want to bring in now nbc's kevin tibl reporting from the medical center. what's it been like in the last 24 hours there? >> well, i think one of the earlier sound bites that you just listened to when the woman was talking it being a war zone is a really apt description as to what has taken place here. 500 plus people shot. that is a war zone. as a matter of fact, one of the doctors who works in the trauma center behind me here, the only level i trauma center in the state, by the way, he was an iraq veteran and said that these are the sorts of injuries that you would expect to find on the battlefield. and here we are finding them in las vegas, nevada. you know, this city is so famous for its bright lights and its brashness. well, obviously everything has gone a little dim in the last 24 hours. and i think that the people are beginning to respond. outside of the hospitals we are seeing donations of drinking water, of food stuffs. and as it's just been mentioned, the lineups outside o

ron brownstein in closing quickly, the "b" word, benghazi, is there a comparison here? >> i don't know. in terms of the operation. but i do think there's a comparison in the terms of the republican congress put enormous effort into understanding exactly what happened there and i think that that effort certainly would apply as a standard here. this exists on two different levels. there's the entire debate we're having about the military mission in what we know and don't know but the other level about the way the president comports himself and unending conflicts and feuds and cultural conflicts with often people of color. he has engaged in since taking office to the point where you cannot say it's coincidence these things keep unfolding one after the other. it is clearly something he sees value in having, i think. now, fighting with a gold star family does not seem like a normal political move, but i think that the evidence is that the president believes it is in his interest to constantly be engaged in these kinds of conflicts and americans have to decide whether they fe
