but we also have them in delaware county, chester county, parts of northern delaware. southern delaware already looking at this snow. now, a lot of it is melting when it hits the ground. it's coming down as big flakes from millsboro all the way over to the jersey shore. the rest of the area will see snow developing later tonight. the band of snow has to come through and it stretches from atlanta all the way up to our area. as we go hour by hour, watch what happens. we stay pretty dry in philadelphia. until about 4:00, 5:00 in the morning. then the temperature drops enough and the storm system lifts a little bit further north and west. that's when we see the first flakes flying here. we'll wait to see those first flakes flying a little later in the morning between 9:00 and 11:00 for the suburbs and the lehigh valley and the poconos. watch the temperatures. they are right around the freezing mark. we'll see that snow sticking here in philadelphia. we'll see it going back and forth between a snow and rain mix, right along the jersey shore and the beaches of delaware. but

delaware. we have a first alert in effect. this is for the pennsylvania suburbs, new jersey and delaware. that's where we'll see the steady snowfall. when? from now to about 2:00 in the morning, that's far south jersey and delaware. between 2:00 and 7:00 tomorrow morning we'll see it starting in philadelphia and the pennsylvania suburbs. this is what you have to consider. this is going to be a long event. this is going to be 18 hours. tonight through sunday night, we'll see heavy wet snow, slippery roads, we'll see kind of at times dangerous travel. and the roads are going to turn icy once the sun sets and the temperatures drop well below freezing. that could be early tomorrow morning and especially for tomorrow night. doppler radar picking up that transition to snow, let's check out who is getting it. let's go to southern delaware. lewis, millsboro, bethany beach. milford right on the line. rive riverview, cape may, avalon, dennis, we go right up to atlantic city looking at some of that light

in northern delaware it's still dry. again, depending where you are, further to the south that's where we're seeing the steadiest of the light snow. we're seeing that around rehobeth beach down to lewis. as we work through the evening hours, you can see the snow progressing up to the north. it doesn't make much progress through the early morning hours tomorrow. but then thereafter, you can see the snow accumulations increasing, up to about almost an inch in dover by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. four inches down in georgetown. as we head through the afternoon hours, that snow continues to fall. there will be a little bit of a mix down towards the coast. which will cut down amounts just a little bit. as you can see, four to six inches across most of northern delaware. tammie will have a full update coming up in just a bit. >>> the snow may create a winter wonderland across the area. local stores selling krimchrist trees say this isn't good. >> reporter: it looks all cozy right now here by the fire at lafayette hill where th

we started yesterday evening in areas like southern delaware. these are the spots that will see the highest amounts and that makes it easy when bill is reading numbers we have values already 1 to 5 inch range over southern delaware. so we're looking at least three more inches in some spots, picking up to a 4 to 8 inch total range. 4 to 6 inches over parts of south jersey that stretches right through areas like kent county and southern new castle county, 2 to 4 inches for pennsylvania suburbs, philadelphia neighborhoods, mercer county. and kind of clipping into parts of south jersey as well. areas like cherry hill and see the northern most parts of gloucester county. as for lowest totals that will be the northern edge of the lehigh valley valley in berks county and 1 to 3 inches lasts up north through the poconos as well. go neighborhood by neighborhood with some of these snow totals and talk about snow intensity throughout the hour coming up in a bit. >> thank you, krystal. she showed us how much you get depends on where you live. one of the spo

and checking the roads live in delaware. the snow starts to stick across the delaware valley. we're tracking snow on this friday evening. we have a team of reporters spread out in pennsylvania. new jersey and delaware. giving you a live look at what's happening now. we begin with chief meteorologist tammie souza with the timing of the heavy snow. >> already in places like south delaware and part of jersey shore. we have a first alert that's issued for the entire area. a little bit less snow will fall in the lee high valley. which is usually the reverse. that has started. between now and 2:00. in the morning. we'll see far south jersey and delaware pick up steam with the snowfall. between about 2 and 7:00 a.m. is when we'll see it approach the philadelphia area. and spreading north of philadelphia. into the pennsylvania suburb. what we're concerned about is the extent of the snow. it will be a long-lived event. about 18 hours long and heaviest could fall from about now through late tomorrow night. a heavy wet snow for shoveling. slippery travel and icy roads by tomorrow night.

and southern delaware. a few flakes have been trying to fall out of those clouds, but they have not reached the ground. so no snow just yet. we're still waiting for those first flakes. a key during the day, the temperatures right at the freezing mark for the lehigh valley and suburbs, but it's above freezing this morning in delaware and in philadelphia. 36 degrees at philadelphia international. even above freezing in those colder neighborhoods 33 in andora and 37 in northeast philadelphia. what that means is the first snow we're going to see will bring the temperature down a bit, but it's more likely to be accumulating on the grass and those colder surfaces than on the roadway. so this morning snow will arrive. it's going to be very light. some scattered snow showers to start with this morning. by late morning and this afternoon that's when we'll get the steady snow. not necessarily heavy, just a steady accumulating snow. and then during the evening hours, the later evening hours especially the snow will ta

an earthquake hits delaware. people across the area felt it. the 4.1-magnitude earthquake hit near dover yesterday afternoon. people from washington, d.c., all the way to connecticut reported feeling it. >> nbc10's katy zachry joins us live now from the art museum. people all over the delaware valley, as tracy mentioned, you know, recognized the moment it struck. >> reporter: they really did. some people telling us they felt the tremors for ten seconds. others as long as 30 seconds. one thing most people agree on is that it was frighting for ait from -- frightening for a pretty good clip. a teacher at holland middle school shared with us this seismograph picture showing the moment the earthquake hit. here are pictures of the damage. the earthquake struck around 4:45 yesterday outside the dover area, causing cracks in this delaware home. a wilmington recording studio shook back and forth for several seconds during it. while there are no reports of injuries, people's nerves were rattled. even at the daycare in conshohocken, kids were playing, and

even into delaware now. northern delaware, new castle county seeing the snow. and right down to the beaches in atlantic city, cape may, garden state parkway you're seeing snow at the moment. here's our snowfall forecast. today, anywhere between a coating and two inches, which normally is not a big deal around here, but normally it's usually about 30, 32 degrees when that happens. but when you have temperatures this cold, it will be very fluffy snow. but the problem is when cars start rolling over that, compacts the snow, melts it a little bit and turns into ice. that's why i'm concerned for our side streets, especially when the temperature free falls tonight down into the low teens. so you want to have a winter kit in your car just in case you slide off the roadway or get stranded, your car's not starting, you want to make sure you have a blanket, some kitty litter in the trunk, the kitty litter helps give your car tires some traction if it's complete ice out there. current temperatures right now at the moment 20 in philadelphia, 21 in the northeast. it's 19 in

here we are rin delaware. it was too warm in southern delaware as you can see with the rain. but we've got to go a couple hours before this happens. by the time we go to 7:00 or 8:00 when it's over, a little over an inch at lewis, georgetown, dover, an inch and a half as we head toward northern delaware we're closer to two inches. in philadelphia itself, we started off right around the noon hour, started off very light. and then, of course, started coming down. the temperature well below freezing. and so as we go through the afternoon and into the evening, we have amounts that are in the two to two and a half inch range. and further to the west, in the northern and western suburbs, lehigh valley, we're seeing lesser amounts of snow. it's already tapering off there. and we're talking about .7 of an inch in allentown and a little bit over an inch in reading. this is a quick moving system as we've seen. it's going to move out fast. by 8:00, it's all gone, but with the temperatures as low as it is, everything is going to ice over again tonight and into tomorrow morning. we'll tal
