sergio quintana has the latest on the attack. >> reporter: happened last night at 7:30. a swarm of deteenagers attacked the rider and someone was able to steal his phone. several in the group punched him and someone was able to pry away his phone. when the train stopped a group of teens tried to run away. bart police were quickly alerted. officers were able to catch several teens. and this incident has rattled riders. >> it is horrible. people are not safe anymore. >> it is sad this happens at this point in time of peoples' lives. hopefully the guy is okay. >> reporter: unfortunately for the victim of the attack, he was not able to identify any of the teens who were arrested as someone who stole his phones. >> this was probably maybe six months ago sort of the same thing was happening in san leandro where people were letting assaulted and robs. >> reporter: a bart spokesperson said investigators are going to get the security camera video from board the bart train to use as part of the investigation. in el cerrito, i am sergio quintana. >>> a night out in a bar turned dea

sergio quintana arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting. he joins us live. >> reporter: you can see that the san jose police crime scene van just arrived here very shortly. this is still a pretty fresh investigation. in fact, detectives are just a couple hours into their investigation and there's not a lot of details available yet. here's what we know. according to police, they were called out to an area of van n van winkle lane, the victim was he suffered oneib gun shot woun and was pronounced dead quickly after police found him. we watched the police search for bullet casings on the sidewalks. according to the calls over the radios, there may have been looking for, we talked with one witness who didn't want us to show her face, she was worried about a family member walking in the neighborhood. >> we were eating and then we saw these cops just driving through here and so we all came outside and then we were trying to call my nephew to see if it's him because he walks down through that way. >> reporter: now she still hasn't been able tozclÃ

sergio quintana joins us with the details on the escape. >> reporter: well, the freeway is open, it was opened a couple hours ago, but the sheriff's deputies have been able to take that man into custody. he's back at john george hospital. he does have injuries after being hit by a car on interstate 580. here's some video of that man in handcuffs. according to an alameda county sheriff's spokesman he was at the hospital on a 72 hour psychiatric hold. at 6:20 this evening he decided to leave. he walked to the fairmont hospital and hopped into a car there, a teenager was inside the car, waiting for his parents inside the hospital. the patient tried car jacking that vehicle with the teen inside. he crashed the car into a garbage truck, then hopped out and tried stealing another car. when that failed he ran to a nearby homeless encampment and ran onto interstate 580. he was clipped by a car, the driver was going about 65 miles per hour. he survived the hit with only minor injuries. that's when he was cuffed. at the moment investigators are trying to figure out why this man attempted such a d

nbc bay area's sergio quintana live at the toll plaza with the latest. sergio? >> reporter: terry, as you mentioned, caltrans crews have been making some progress. they did clear all the lanes of their equipment and of a lot of the debris from that collision this morning but you can see way down there there are still four lanes on the bay bridge toll plaza that are still closed. in this video you can see the box truck careening across several lanes heading to toll booth 14. >> he struck five other vehicles that were in the lanes waiting to go through the toll plaza. after striking those vehicles continued and then struck a toll booth. >> reporter: inside that toll booth, 46-year-old c.c.han, a 10-year caltrans toll worker. several of her fellow collectors described her as the nicest person in the crew. they say their husband and 10-year-old daughter are too upset to speak publicly. governor jerry brown ordered flags lowered to half staff to honor her and he issued a short statement on behalf of he and his wife.
