andrew mccabe the latest top justice department official to feel heat from republicans. also reportedly under fire deputy attorney general rod rosenstein in a controversial memo authored by house republicans that could be released today. we start with our reporters, pete williams, julia ainsley, national security and justice reporter, and an msnbc contributor, also a former fbi assistant director for counterintelligence and current coo. pete, let's start with you. tell us about mr. mccabe stepping down about two months earlier than expected. >> yeah, just over a month earlier than expected. there are two ways you age out of the fbi and face mandatory retirement. one of them is your age and the second is the amount of time you've been in the bureau. based on those calculations that would have put andrew mccabe out of the fbi in mid-march. he has told people for years, well before president trump was elected, his plan was to leave at that time. that would be the earliest date at which he could leave. he wouldn't have to be out by that date but that's when he becomes eligib

the retiring i guess of andrew mccabe at the fbi. lots of questions about whether or not the president had been involved in that, he was no fan of mccabe, often bringing him up on twitter. so the question is, was this political pressure or did he do this on his own? let's bring in peter alexander who's at the white house. peter, the white house says there was no pressure involved in this. they had nothing to do with it, repeatedly referred questions to the fbi. but the reality is everybody knew donald trump was not happy with mccabe. >> what we don't know is the what the president thinks because we haven't heard from him publicly. we know what he thought about mccabe with what appeared to be a coordinated pr campaign. the president repeatedly going after mccabe on twitter. sarah said that basically the white house has been cooperative throughout the entirety of this russia investigation, and that it was the white house's hope, frankly, her hope that this would clear up the russia fever. the fundamental principle here was russia inter
