. >> this fire happened in antioch and let's go ahead and show you a map. it was at the country place assisted living on olive lane >> leslie brinkley is live with the story. >> reporter: dan and kristen, you can imagine the panic of getting 49 alzheimer's patients evacuated from the building behind me and then bussed away to another assisted living facility about a mile away from here in antioch. the red cross is bringing in cots to help the displaced seniors. that fire started around 2:00 in a laundry room here at country place and it triggered a sprinkler head that flooded the rooms in the common areas. residents were hoping to go back in and recover their belongings but they were evacuated. no one was injured and authorities called a mass casualty event because they needed to find immediate housing for 49 alzheimer's patients. a facility called stepped up and these residents are likely to be displaced for a while. a cleanup crew i spoke to here said that there was a fire in a neighboring building just a year ago also that appeared to start in a laundry

the sheriff's deputies had been following this stolen truck on highway four in antioch. they did not activate the emergency lights. a spokesman said deputies decided to turn the light on for safety reasons after the suspect exited the freeway. that was when the suspect sped up and ran a red light and collided with the family.>> it was a police pursuit. he was already being chased. >> reporter: jesus believes the deputies could have done something different to prevent this collision. he is angry with the suspect. deputies identify him as 23- year-old noel salcido of pittsburgh. but right now his focus is on his two-year-old. >> she can't breathe on her own yet. they gave her two days. we are hoping for the best. the devastating crash in antioch has taken the life of two children. a 2-year-old was declared brain dead. her 4-year-old sister died last week. you can see the photo of the two sisters. they were both riding in a truck with their mom hit by a driver racing away from antioch police. this happened last wednesday. today, that manmade his first court appearance in the case. he's 23 years old. he did not enter a plea because he doesn't have yet an attorney. he faces two counts of murder, two counts of drug possession and felony evasion. after the hearing, a heartbreaking twist as the suspect's family spoke to reporters. they say their son has a drug problem but would never intentionally hurt anyone. they say they've learned they are distant relatives with the little girls that their son is accused of killing as he ran away. >> the grandpa is related to my girls' cousins. >> these are the consequences of his actions so they are distant cousins. the mother was seriously injured in the crash but she's expected to survive. >>> days after unveiling ten new trai

laura anthony has more from antioch. >> all you heard was an atomic boom. >> reporter: witness paula richardson says the sound was unimaginable on summersville road beyond her business. it started when one of the deputies tried to pull over the white truck, believed stolen. as the driver pulled on to the off-ramp, sped up and ran the light, slamming directly into the silver truck with three people inside, including two young girls. >> obviously, the white truck hit the gray truck. my husband was on our motor home and said the truck went up on its side and debris flew all over it, exploded all over the place. >> while paramedics and firefighters worked to save the family inside the silver truck, police had the driver of the white pickup on the ground in handcuf handcuffs. he was also injured and taken to the hospital. >> the dude was in the wrong. >> nicholas oliver lives near the crash scene. >> it's sad. i got four kids. i'd be devastated if something like this happened to us. >> witnesses say the driver of the stolen white truck made no effort to slow down before he hit this silver
