what's a super moon? the moon travels in an ellipse around the earth, so a couple times a year it's closer than normal looking bigger than normal. that's tonight. a blood moon is when the moon appears red when the earth's shadow completely covers it. we call that a total lunar eclipse. that is happening tonight. it happens once every two to three year here and the blue moon which i thought was the second full moon of a calendar month, but it's not what most people think. take a listen as to what the blue moon really is. >> every two or three years or so there will be a fourth moon in that quarter and they used to just tell the farmers who are going out and harvesting by the light of the moon you got four full moons in this period, in this season. so for whatever reason they called the third one of that string the blue moon. >> reporter: so a super blue blood moon coming up tonight. there will be some fog in our north bay valley, some high cloud cover, but the majority of the bay area will be able to see i
