nbc news medical correspondent dr. john torres has the answers you need in this flu emergency. >> reporter: in the growing number of young people dying this flu season, there's now another. florida seventh grader dylan winnick. >> we used to walk home from school every day. to think that my little brother, i'm never going to see him again? it's unexplainable. >> reporter: his heartbroken family stunned by how quickly he died at home. >> his temperature was 98 degrees. then just within a couple of hours they found him. and he had already passed. that's why we don't -- we can't understand how that happened. >> reporter: his parents thought his sniffles and exhaustion meant he had a cold, but now they believe it was the flu. so how can you tell the difference between a bad cold and the flu? stuffy nose and cough? could be either. severe body aches that come on quickly and nausea, a sign of the flu. as are vomiting and diarrhea, though mostly in children. a high fever above 101 degrees usually means the flu but not always.

nbc 20 10 was on the scene. fun fire broke out just after 2:00 this morning hitting two men in their 30 with bullets also piercing a car. one man is in critical condition at the hospital. the other victim listed in stable. >>> is anybody else in that house? they need to get out. >> and new from overnight, an uber dreyer helped people get away from this house fire. he saw the flames on the porch and alerted neighbors about the danger. a child is in the hospital and we're working to find out the condition. the fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. >>> the atlantic county doctor accused of ordering his wife's murder is found dead in his jail cell in an parent suicide. a source tells us he was found face down on his bed with a torn sheet around his neck. that source also telling nbc 10 he left a six-page suicide note. police and family members accused the doctor of having his wife killed to help keep from exposing a drug ring he was allegedly running with a motorcycle gang. >> i think that the doctor

we sent nbc medical correspondent dr. john torres, who is an emergency room doctor himself, to one of the busiest e.r.s in the nation to get answers. >> reporter: at maimonides medical center in brooklyn, dr. eitan dickman and his staff are seeing a 30% spike in flu patients. how many patients coming in the door with the flu have not gotten the flu shot? >> we've seen a fair number of people even if they've gotten the flu shot are still getting ill from the flu. >> how do you feel? >> blah. >> reporter: people like murial greenblatt who gets her flu shot every year. >> i was getting very weak. i couldn't walk. >> reporter: children are getting sick, too. many schools are closed. why is the flu so bad this year? the vaccine is only 30% effective against this year's strain. which is more aggressive than those in recent years. >> so those younger folks have not ever been exposed to that strain of virus and they're more susceptible. >> reporter: doctors say go to the hospital if you have trouble breathing, can't keep fluids d

nbc news medical correspondent dr. john torres has the details for us. >> reporter: a simple walk with her dog is a miracle for cynthia dodd. less than a year ago the 46-year-old suffered a massive stroke in her sleep. >> i would have died and if i did live, i would be complete vegetable. >> reporter: by the time she was found in the morning, it had been more than six hours, which had been considered too late to remove the brain clot and save the patient. but now new guidelines from the american stroke and heart associations say doctors have up to 24 hours to use clot-busting devices like this thin wire. >> it's a massive game changer. we've had these devices now for a period of time. now we've expanded the window that we can intervene and act on patients. >> reporter: that's the life-saving part. >> life-saving and recoveries. >> reporter: one study found expanding the window of time to even 16 hours cut in half the number of deaths and severe disability. >> with these treatments you more than double the chances of so
