that's where nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live for us this morning. another water main break is shutting down a big portion of the expressway. fill us in, randy. >> reporter: this is something you do not see every day. the vine street expressway closed in both directions, and i'll show you why as we zoom in. it's turned no an ice rink on the eastbound lanes. we're told it appears that the eastbound traffic being diverted all the way to the schuylkill expressway. westbound traffic diverted to broad street. let me show you some video of this water main break. you can't see the water coming down but you can see the ice that has accumulated on the expressway. that is why they do not want anybody driving on that because it's so slippery and dangerous. they're diverting traffic. this is the second water main break in this area in the past few hours. let's come back live and show you a little bit of steam coming out of one of the manholes here. that started picking up within the past 20 minutes as these philadelphia water department crews arrived on scene. t

randy gyllenhaal was the first reporter at the scene. randy, update us on the conditions there now. >> reporter: good news, all the lanes are finally back open after four hours. take a look at the vine street expressway moving once again but you can see water and ice still forming down there especially in the lanes. take it easy. this all happens after a water main tore open an eight-inch main sending cold water onto the highway, streets and sidewalks. penndot crews were working to clear the snow and ice that formed after the water froze over. it was an ice rink for hours on the vine. water from the leak went underground into the underground steam pipes that caused this amazing scene. they say when it gets this cold especially temperatures almost at zero. temperatures are likely to burst and flood. >> when the water temperature drops below a certain point, you see a much higher rate of water main breaks. water expands at colder temperatures. that puts pressure on the old and aging iron pipes in the city. the same thing can happen inside

. >> randy gyllenhaal is live inside one of those flu tents in allentown. randy, give us a look around there. >> reporter: across the commonwealth, flu cases are spiking dramatically. the health department says in the last week they've seen a sharp increase, including 15 deaths in the past week alone. the number of cases overwhelming emergency rooms to the point that they're packed. here at lehigh valley hospital cedarcrest, they put out this outdoor tent. this is called the surge hospital where they take overflow patients because of all the cases they're seeing. i'm joined by lindsay howe. nursing director. what are you seeing at the hospital? >> a lot of volume surge related to winter illness. whether that be influenza or the respiratory virus or the g.i. bug or norovirus. we're seeing people that are having lengthy stays in the hospital. >> reporter: here in the tent is not necessarily all the flu patients. the worst patients will be inside the hospital. >> correct. we're using our mobile surge hospital to help us deal with the demands. we're using it to
