what chuck schumer said. schumer at least three times or possibly four referred to this as the trump shutdown which is now trending on social media. as you know the president and the administration have called it the schumer shutdown for a while now, he's saying that the only person that can be blamed now is the president. he says something that's interesting that he thought they would come to some osort of dea. he said the president called him up and invited him to the white house and had a productive meeting and in the spirit of bipartisan and giving something and he said he everyone put the border wall on the table everyone though democrats did not want to go that far and the president rejected that. so i think that's important to point out in our conversation as we continue because you know the blame game is going to go around and we'll assess this to try to figure out what happened and how we got to this point. i want to bring in our expert here phil mattingly who's watching this and jeff that's watching

we heard schumer's side of the story. i would be interested to hear what the president said. >> even beyond that. what give anyone who is negotiating with this person or this president, the confidence he's going to keep his word? in a negotiation. even making a promise to do something at later point. >> you raise a good point. he's had meetings and come out of the meeting everyone was on one page and a few days later, we hear something different from the president. but the reality is, when it comes to daca he has been clear. and republicans have been clear. they're willing to protect dreamers in exchange for funding -- >> republicans have been cloear on daca. many republicans don't necessarily want it to happen. but they think it should happen. >> certainly. that's the will of the people. >> i have to take issue with that. i don't think this president has been clear on daca. he laughed at bush about it on the campaign trail. and said it should be a billion of love. using the same language bush made. and wanted to do somet

you know schumer, mcconnell. you have worked with them when you were in the white house in the obama administration. so they should be able to come up with a deal. who's going to blink thfirst, d you think? >> i agree with everything that's been said. the fact is that democrats are under enormous pressure from their base that feels very strongly about this issue and feels like they have been rolled in the past. they know that 80% of americans are on their side on this issue. they believe what the president said, which is that at the end of the day, the president of the united states will bear the brunt, whatever polling says now, the party that's in charge and the party that runs the white house and both houses will be blamed. nonetheless, i think that as this wears on, it's not going to be good for anyone. and my guess is that there will be some sort of short-term solution there. and with some, some triggering mechanism that would indicate to democrats or assure democrats that this daca issue is going to be take
