the nine other uc campuses. if approved this would be the second tuition hike for the second time in the second year in a row for students at the uc schools. take a look at your tv screen, see what they are proposing, a 2.7% hike that amounts to $342 a year, so if you are looking at the overall cost it would be $12,630 increase to $12,972. those are for california residents. uc president janet napolitano has argued that the hike is necessary because sacramento is giving the uc less money than expected. governor jerry brown's budget calls for a 3% increase in the state funding of the uc which is down from the 4% increase in recent years. as you can imagine students we spoke with are not happy that they might be the ones who have to make up for that shortfall. >> i think it's ridiculous. they are already overcharging us for a lot of insignificant things, for example, cal athletics. they seem to be paying more attention to the sports than to academics and also they overcharge us in like miscellaneous things like pr

uc wants to raisin state tuition by $342: this would be for the next academic year. uc officials say increased financial aid would cover the added cost for more than half of the 180,000 students who get free tuition. uc says one of the reasons they are thinking about increasing tuition again is because they have been getting less money from the state over the years. just this year, governor brown proposed a 3% increase down from 4% in each of the last few years. he says that a little more scrutiny on how the system is spending things needs to happen so if this is a proved the uc system would get an additional $137 million and say they use that money for things liken rolement, growth and financial aid. from ucsf mission bay, jackie ward, kpix 5. >>> several cities across the bay area still scrambling to implement some local rules for recreational marijuana sales. berkeley is asking for input on what to do. the city is hosting a series of open meetings to talk about the selection process for marijuana businesses and delivery services. the first is next tuesday. >>> san

the union says the uc is proposing cuts to the pensions of future nurses. >> we feel that when the uc takes away pension cuts, it hurts all of us. we are standing united. we are in it together. we don't sell out the future nurses coming into our bargaining unit. so we fight for our current and future nurses. >> reporter: now, this morning a representative from the university of california sent me a statement on these ongoing contract negotiations. here is part of it. it says the university of california is eager to finalize a comprehensive contract that recognizes the integral role our nurses play in patient care and their significant contributions to the university overall. uc is committed to market competitive wages, excellent health and retirement benefits, and safe working conditions for our 14,000 nurses. these cna nurses are supposed to be staging similar rallies and informational pickett lines throughout the day at various uc hospitals across california. we should reiterate here that these are simply informational picket lines. these are not strikes. all of the nurse that's too

the regents want more time to convince the governor to give the uc system more money. here's what's under consideration. >> reporter: the university of california regents had a heated discussion regarding the 2.7 tuition hike for in state students attending one of the uc campuses. this boils down to a $342 a year increase in student fees. a student's tuition would go up to $12,972 for the 2018-2019 academic year. >> it's easy for people to sit around a table and say that $342 is consequential. that is a big impact on the life of our student around the state of california. >> reporter: financial aid covers the full tuition bill for 60% of students. families with an income of $50,000 or less pay no tuition, out of state students are hit hider. they will see an increase of $978 more a year, that means they could be paying $28,992 in tuition and student fees. that's not including room and board. the system says it's necessary to increase fees because governor jerry brown says he will only allow a 3% funding in his proposed state budget. brown has said uc can do more to cut

abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at uc berkeley with more. hi, amy. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. uc berkeley is one of several places where young people will be impacted by this ruling. students who are here because of daca and are starting their spring semester will not have to worry about that march deadline that was quickly approaching and that could have meant deportation. that has been stopped for now. a federal judge in san francisco has temporarily saved the daca program, that stands for deferred action for childhood arrivals. the program gives legal status to immigrants who were brought here to the u.s. as children. this move puts pressure now on congress to come up with a permanent solution. president trump brought lawmakers together yesterday to discuss a potential bill. >> it would be a bill of love. it also has to be a bill where we're able to secure our border. >> reporter: daca covers about 800,000 people. the judge says his ruling must stay in place and protect daca until a lawsuit against the trump administration plays
