that, given that utah is one of the reddest states in the country. after we saw what happened in alabama and after orrin hatch and his run for re-election, mitt romney who got 73% of the vote in utah in the 2012 presidential race would be the odds on big time favorite to hold that in the republican column. >> and give us a sense of what you think the white house is thinking. when you look back at the president's trip to utah, he really pushed orrin hatch for re-election. so is there a expense the white house will be a little disappointed? what can we expect, do you think, in terms of of a response? >> yeah. disappointed for sure. surprised, no, not really. hatch has not wavered. remember when he was reelected six years ago, he said this would be his last term and he has been polite in response to the trump administration entreaties and the direct entreaties from the president himself to remain. but he's never really suggested strongly that he would run again. so no, not surprised. and clearly, there is a fair amount of worry and concern, yes. what wo

he's a rock star in utah. utah republicans are not too crazy about trump. what is the white house's thinking about the prospect of romney coming to washington is this. >> well i think they anticipate if he were to come to washington that he could be this kind of thorn in the president's side. he's been a very outspoke ep critic of this president. that is no secret but there is a question of whether he would be. you've had people like jeff flake, bob corker, all having scathing criticism and voted for major pieces of legislation like tax reform and health care and so forth. so i'm taking this call for what it is today. because remember that famous dinner that we saw the two of them at, only for romney to come out. but i think it is serving him well to show when he distances himself from the president and in a place like utah and when he agrees with him. >> i'm trying to figure out what romney has in mind here. because does he want to be sort of an elder statesman and take a senate seat and hold it. and when they run they get that potomac fever. does part of
