i think this was the most forward leaning report that we have had in terms of kim jong-un's not just willingness, but his strong desire for talks. i think what changed was his posture in a very dramatic way that in all honesty, tema as a little bit of a surprise to us a well that he was -- came as little bit of a surprise to us as well that he was so willing.

so i'm not saying he's on the ropes, kim jong-un. but i'm saying that the united states needs to have some very clear objectives. we cannot have any distance with south korea. they're our allies. but south korea has been helpful in this process. we have to reassure japan that they're not going to be vulnerable. and they're very nervous. i think china has to be brought in right now because they have been helpful, even though they play games with everybody. russia used to be part of the six-party talks. i'd probably keep the russians away right now. because they're meddling too much against our interests. so i want the summit to be a framework for future negotiations. we're not going to make a deal right there. but set up a process where we have a strategy, a diplomatic team, a military team with goals on denuclearization, on missile activity, conventional weapons and also -- >> i think, governor, that's the real question here, we're just about out of time, but to the point of clear objectives, do you believe the president has them? do

this meeting with kim jong-un, is it ever going to happen? >> i think that's the question right now. there's a lot of things we haven't heard about time, place, ground rules. president is clearly signaling at his rally last night and on twitter that he wants to do it but there are folks questioning how is this going to work? >> this is better than shouting insults over twitter at north korea so i think this is an improvement. but the question is, what are we getting in return? what are the concessions we are giving just a meeting? for kim jong-un and north korea, the meeting is itself a very big deal. he can use it, propaganda back home on level with the president of the united states. but we don't want him to be allowed to get away with that. we want something in return and it's not clear to me what exactly are getting in return. >> i think one of the scarier questions is not just does the meeting occurred but what happens after the meeting? if they don't arrive at something that is acceptable to the world and to us. where do we go from ther

and what does jong-un want? remember, we have only heard from the south koreans. we haven't actually heard from the north koreans themselves that they are willing to talk about denuclearization. and some analysts have pointed out the denuclearization means different things to the north koreans than it does to the south. so a lot of things to work out from this meeting right now. the least of which really is where it's going to be and what the agenda will be. the foreign minister for south korea is trying to manage expectations, saying we don't want to repeat the mistakes of the past. >> and kelly, what can president trump offer in exchange for denuclearization? >> well, it depends first of all on what kim jong-un will accept. what are his motivations? that's been a lot of talk that economic sanctions are really affecting the country and that he wants to build up the economy. of north korea. so lifting sanctions is the obvious one, easing sanctions, some sort of economic aid. normalizing relations and trade with

un to make him come here because remember until now kim jong un has not stepped outside of his country so was it the threat of more sanctions or is china offered something meaningful either way it demonstrates the china clearly does have sway over north korea and also and i think this is the most important point china wants to illustrate to demonstrate that it's not prepared to be sidelined when. north korea and the president the united states have the face to face talks all right adrian thank you for that let's go over to kathy now in the south korean capital seoul and is this a welcome gauge or into a welcome addition to this these multiple axes of dialogue as far as seoul is concerned. that seems to be what the south korean government is saying that this improvement in relations between china and north korea is a positive signal ahead of these major summits between president of south korea and kim jong un and of course between kim jong un and donald trump the unification ministry saying that the improved relationship helps to address the issues on the korean peninsula denuclearizati
