stoneman dougla. high school, and is now studying at the university of central florida. danielle, a senior in 2016, attends florida polytechnic university, and they both join us on the phone. rachel, let me begin with you. after listening to your documentary again, take us back to last month when you found out about the shooting, 17 killed at your former high school. what was your reaction? >> first of all, i did not believe that it was real. i hate to use this cliche right off the bat, but you never think it would happen to you. when i first found out, i thought, oh, maybe it is just somebody pulled the fire alarm, somebody made a threat, because that has happened in the past, but it was not until i was watching the news and they came out officially with statistics that 17 people had been killed. the first thing was obviously, i was completely shocked because i am seeing my high school on the news, the parking lot where i was not allowed to make left turns into, all of a sudden it is plastered everyw

the marjory stoneman douglas act certainly isn't perfect. the idea of getting more guns into schools to reduce gun violence seems to be a thought end m more tragedy. but it makes it a great step in the right direction. and it proves what i tell my students is true, their actions can change the world. i got into teaching bausz i wanted to inspire students but now they are inspiring me. the issues surrounding mass shootings in this country are complex and to pretend otherwise is naive and put the general public and particularly our children in dang remember. people have suggested its mental health and school issue, i agree with both of those statements, need more help with mentally ill but better quality of life for thousands of people who suffer from these mental illnesses. we do need to increase safety in our schools to protect children against those who would want to harm they. but to say that the issue of mass shootings isn't also a gun issue is absurd. i cannot imagine a scenario in which nikolas cruz could have come to my school armed wi
