boy, this is a really tricky situation down in southern california. if the forecast is what they say it is, they are going to get a ton of rain. >> i think even if the forecast is wrong, they are going to get a ton of rain. that's how you know. a ton of rain down there is different than a ton of rain up here. if they get 2 to 4 inches, they will have problems. if those rainfall rates are extremely high, they could have more problems in the burned zones. it is a fire issue because of those. but it is also a topographic issue. the way the central coast and south coast is. they don't have good drainage like we do. we have great drainage because the mountains and topography get adjusted to that. they get moderate rain, but not copious amounts like they will see. a 3 to 4 inch rain event will cause problems. l.a. river will flood. malibu will have issues. mudslides. the whole bit. the reason for that is clear. the plume of subtropical moisture is all the main thing, down in this zone, down south of the bay area. south of big sur. sorry about that. we are u

that moisture stretches away from southern california. any time these systems tap into some tropical moisture coming up just to the east of hawaii, this could really boost those rain rates. fortunately, we think in the burn areas of southern california, the biggest punch out of this incoming storm while the bay area might get about 1-3 inches of rain between tuesday and saturday. highest totals will be in the central california coast down to the hills there north of santa barbara where the thomas fire burn area was. some models indicate maybe 6-10 inches of rain there. that is the affect of the atmospheric river. runoff and mudslide issues will be something we'll be watching closely by midweek. for the sierra by the end of the week, by next weekend once again we could see 30-40 inches of snow. unbelievable. sierra snow pack now about 50% of average. we've got a warm storm coming in for tuesday and wednesday. then the gulf of alaska trough starts to sweep through. thursday and friday snow levels are going to start to drop on down. could be

they saw up to 9 inches of rain across central and southern california. and for us, look at what's going on. so the entire state definitely has dealt with the atmospheric river. look at the rain overnight. that's what people woke up to this morning up and down california. we definitely felt it, as well. and now behind that is a cold front. storm totals from this week, look at venado now, almost up to 7 inches. that's this week alone. the storm totals, we have more to come friday through sunday. so we are going to add to that by the end of the weekend. right now the atmospheric river is gone. you can see the cold front coming from the north towards the south-southeast and that's what we're seeing through fremont. it's a little lighter showers definitely nothing like what we saw earlier with that wet tropical system that came through. but what this cold front will do is cause our winds to pick up. we are seeing that at sfo. west winds at 23. redwood city 12, 15 in fremont. and san rafael now 12-mile-per- hour winds, novato look at that picking up to 21. so

it continues at this hour in southern california. police say the suspect has already killed one officer and wounded another. this all started around 9:00 last night. police say they got a call about a wreckless driver. officers say they spotted the vehicle, and that's when a short pursuit began. the driver crashed his car though and ran into an apartment complex, and barricaded himself in one of the units. and police say the suspect shot the officers, through the door, when they approached. one officer who did survive the shooting underwent emergency surgery and is in stable condition. he is expected to be okay. again, one officer was killed, and as we mentioned, the suspect is still barricaded in that unit at this time. >>> and walnut creek police are trying to find the motive in a brutal beating death of a security guard, as co-worker now is facing murder charges, in what is being called an unprovoked attack. >> 1800 cassy avenue. reported assault with a metal on. >> 34-year-old hakim major was arrested on suspicion of using that l

kron 4 news (grant) in southern california. a flood advisory has been issued in parts of santa barbara and ventura counties. the region has already been hit hard by deadly wildfires and deadly mudslides. some 30- thousand people have had to evacuate their homes. one homeowner is under mandatory evacuation orders - but says he keeps leaving and coming back.mark williams/homeowner: "i'm worried enough to have a bobcat tractor stationed in the backyard and jump on it and manage the mudflow if it happens. my anxiety level is too high to stay away so i've got to come back and check it out." back in 2005, this community was devastated by a deadly landslide and declared geologically unstable. then last december - the thomas fire further weakened the hillside. county leaders say they don't want to take any chances with this storm. thousands more people will go under mandatory evacuations in the foothills of the san gabriel mountains of los angeles county tonight. the storm is expected to last through friday. if you're heading down 101 to southern california it may be a different story. chp is warning drivers that if california's coast gets pounded by this morning's storm they may be forced to close 101. santa barbara county has already issued mandatory evacuations yesterday, those went into effect at 12:00 noon and the national weather service issued a flash flood watch for parts of santa barbara, ventura and los angeles counties. they predict parts of santa barbara county could get hit with half an inch of rain per hour, that's almost three inches of rain by 8:00 a.m. and that's what's prompting the evacuation. >> well, as i've said before, we're not going to drag you out of your homes. this ultimately is a choice that everyone has to make, but as i've also said this really is something that has to become part of the new normal for the southern part of santa barbara county. >> reporter: these latest evacuation orders come after january's storm that triggered mudslides that destroyed homes and killed at least 21 people. as for chp their concerns that the roads could

the weather headline is southern california. you have an atmospheric river, there it is, right in there, and you see the focus of it. that's high density moisture pushing in and right around point conception, right here, so this whole area -- even -- you know, you don't think about it a lot, but this area, um, just south of point conception, let's see -- right in here -- this area kind of faces south. so when these winds come in, they -- it's like when the winds come in south in big sur, they hit the hills perpendicular so santa barbara, ventura, those hills have a kick to the south. and that really enhances rainfall from an already wet system. you're going to see amazing and impressive topographic increases in rainfall. so there's no question they are going to have problems there tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon and probably friday morning. the storm door is wide open! we're on the wrong end of it, sadly. we are getting rain but, boy, we could really -- if this was our atmospheric river, it was up to 6" easy for us which
