legend of stephen hawking. any biographer has an almost a resistible urge to fictionalize their subject and i do wonder what i did to kepler. it is more of a problem when it is historical but there you get all the information you can and do the best you can. when it is somebody that is still alive you have a certain obligation to them to make it a little more real, to keep it a little more authentic. i had the advantage of going in fairly often to talk with him. not a lot but occasionally when i had a new book coming out, asked him a question, sometimes i would go in for that purpose, and when i was writing this book, i would see him in person and think about what i had written about him, wasn't quite right, i have gone astray from the real stephen hawking, fictionalized him a little bit. it is easy to do. the choice of a word, tone of a paragraph, the urge to make something a little more dramatic or little more funny. so easy to do and hard to resist. i also felt obliged to respect to a certain extent, to a la
