and so, all of these books came to mount vernon. and so i have a whole chapter on books.tis well, again, we have the same question that we have to keep asking over and over again. did george washington read these books or were they just shelf fillers? if you look at it, george washington catalog the library twice. the fact that he catalog it is an indication that he -- the fact that he had logge -- it is an indication that he looked through all of these books. the first time he did that was at the custis house. and then he did it again when he incorporated those books into his own library. my theory is that george washington retained the custis organizational scheme and then integrated his own books into that scheme. that is what i talk about. in one particular chapter. what you can see is that we know some of the books towards had beforehand and we can see him combining them in terms of subject matter with other books. -- games.as called books aboutwo other card playing in the library. something to keep in mind. it is a nice check.

he had one visit to mount vernon and had one exchange of letters with him, and this was the basis of his connection on which he claimed authority to write. he also did a lot of interviewing. he did look up people who had known washington as a boy. of the stories he tells about washington may even have been true. [applause] and weems is one of those writers, like james fenimore cooper or h.p. lovecraft, their sentences are terrible but their stories are terrific. and the proof of that is that we all know one of weems' stories. this is the story of the cherry tree. of course you know it. washington's father imports a special cherry tree. he also gives his young son a hatchet. and then shortly thereafter he notices that the bark of the cherry tree has been cut, and he suspects what has happened but he asks his son anyway, george, do you know damaged my cherry tree? and young george says, i cannot tell a lie, father i cannot tell a lie. i did it with my hatchet. but weems goes on to say that washington's father welcomed his confession, and said this is more precious to me than gold or si

school ey: vernon district is holding maple weekend. it's run for two weekends each year by the future farmers of america, f.f.a. this f.f.a. organization has approximately 125 members and its success has been recognized both on state and national levels. despite the two nor easters new york received in march alone, the f.f.a. organization has worked tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming maple season. this weekend they'll join 170 other local organizations to prepare demonstrations on how to harvest and produce maple syrup products, to host pancake breakfast which is feature our award winning syrup, and tours of the mouth watering sugar shack where maple products are created. last year, the extravaganza drew more than 2,000 visitors. i'm proud to take parking lot each year in this event expertly organized by students in f.f.a. these same f.f.a. members travel throughout new york state using their maple syrup trailer to educate other students in high schools across our state. teaching them thousand to produce maple syrup and produce map
