kathy novak joins us live from seoul pardon me. so tell us more about about the scale of these exercises. well when these exercises come around every year north korea usually reacts very angrily so they were initially delayed as you mentioned because of the winter olympics the fear was that it may inflame tensions with north korea while the winter olympics and paralympics were happening here in february and march but not only were they delayed it seems they've been shortened as well so the overall scale we're told will remain the same but instead of going on for two months they will only go on for a month and that seems to be in light of the more peaceful atmosphere that is prevailing here on the korean peninsula in the lead up to a summit meeting between the leaders of the two koreas and with plans for a meeting between kim jong un the leader of north korea and the u.s. president donald trump so i think the sense of between the u.s.

korea and the world let's go live now to our correspondent who's in the south korean capital seoul kathy novak and this announcement came a little over an hour ago and came as a bit of a surprise didn't it. it did it came out of meeting of the plenary session of the central committee of the workers' party which we're told by casey in a the north korean state media agency was chaired by the leader himself kim jong un and now and what appears to be a significant shift in his policy going forward about five years ago kim jong un had launched the signature policy where he had this jewel track of pursuing the nuclear weapons program of north korea and also promoting its economic development and now what he seems to be saying is that the nuclear weapons program as far as he is concerned is complete and that will allow north korea to shift the focus to war and developing the economy when north korea was launching regular pace intercontinental ballistic missiles intermediate range ballistic missiles and also testing nuclear bombs last year it seemed to indicate that north korea had no intention

and for the first sancho proceedings will be broadcast live we'll go live now to our correspondent kathy novak who's outside the courthouse in seoul. hey the picture of them what is the scene kathy while martin poc and he actually tried to get an injunction against the court proceedings being broadcast live that was rejected because it was deemed it was in the national public interest for the proceedings to be broadcast just outside the gate where i am standing small groups of her supporters are gathered and no doubt many south koreans will be watching on as the verdict is read park herself has been boycotting the trial since late last year she's been refusing to turn up for the hearings so she is not expected to be in the room when the verdict is read out today judgment day for the woman who made history as south korea's first female president and then as the first leader of the country to be impeached and removed from office she was indicted on eighteen criminal charges relating to bribery and corruption the culmination of months of unprecedented protests in central sort of. public out

novak she's joining us from seoul to give us the regional perspective particularly from south korea kathy we've got this summit coming up between the north and the south korea's fairly soon do we know what kind of concessions the south is prepared to make in order to achieve some sort of reduction in tension with with the north. well the lines coming out of the south korean government tend to be that the focus from their perspective will be on denuclearization and bringing peace to the korean peninsula south korea under the administration of the liberal president and has been happy to engage with north korea and have dialogue so it is pressing ahead with this summit it has announced that portions of it are going to be televised live that much is being made of that here in south korea and the fact that kim jong un the north korean leader is open to that happening almost three thousand journalists have registered to cover the summit so the south korean government for its part seems to be quite optimistic going into it but in terms of concession i think that remains to be seen in the past so

novak joins us live now from seoul and i know there's not much information at this point kathy but what are you hearing about the decision in pyongyang about these myside a nuclear tests. yes that seems to be a major development coming out of the north korea and out of its announcement through its state media the korean central news agency take the anything that's on april twenty first which is today local time north korea will stop nuclear tests and launches an intercontinental ballistic missile and that it intends to shut down a nuclear test site inside north korea and that in the country's north to prove that it is the valley to suspend nuclear tests the humans on the run five years ago launched his signature policy which was basically a dual track to pursue both the development of the nuclear weapons program and economic policy and what it appears now is that north korea is announcing that as far as it is concerned its nuclear weapons program incomplete that is announcement that north korea made last year with the tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles and its most powerful nu

who is on the south side of that demilitarized zone starting with you then kathy this a declaration the joint declaration to come from the two leaders is pleasing to many what are the points do you think that will go down well in south korea particularly . well i think south koreans will welcome this declaration that there will be no more war on the korean peninsula this is something that the south korean president mungy in has been promising for some time now it has certainly been a big day for him there are these been these commitments to move two wars a peace regime into and the current status that was brought about in one nine hundred fifty three when the armistice was signed and hostilities in the korean war and now we're hearing from both korea saying that they want to move on from that and that they want to pursue meetings between the two koreas and the united states and also a meeting between the two koreas the united states and china important there because it was north korea china and the u.s. representing the u.n. allies that signed that armistice at the end of fighting i

novak who is in seoul so kathy what else do we do we know about this huge announcement. well this is coming right now from the south korean presidential blue house the office of president mungy in that has been briefing journalists following that historic meeting between president monday and the north korean leader kim jong un on friday and in that briefing we are told that kim jong un told monday in that he intends to close the north korean nuclear test facility and invite experts from the u.s. and south korea as well as journalists to inspect it he seemed to refer to the speculation that some experts had been saying that perhaps after six nuclear tests the most recent one being the most powerful in north korea said it was a hydrogen bomb that perhaps the nuclear test facility had been compromised that north korea would not be able to conduct any more nuclear tests anyway but apparently what kim jong un said was that there are two more tunnels that the international community was unaware of and that's something that they would see if they came next month as invited to i
