you're looking at corporate bonds of some of the russell, right? >> corporate bond spreads have been tight for the last two or three years and continue to get tighter. at some point there is crossover where value doesn't present itself like it did, are you, do you want double as at 15 to 20 basis points over treasurys? are you getting paid for that risk? same thing going on happening in the emerging market and high yield debt market. happening into the ig as well. those spreads at some point will get so tight that investors will seek other alternatives. liz: once again we see flattening of curves and maybe inversion which is a precursor, tim, to a recession. if kevin doesn't see it on the horizon, do you? >> i don't think so. the yield curve is one indicator. it is flashing a warning sign but other indicators showing good strength. i think the other thing you need to know about the yield curve, we haven't inverted at this low rate. the past seven times we inverted were at much higher levels. so it is unclear what will happen if we invert at the low

take a look, even the russell 2000. the s&p 500 and russell 2000 all on pace for their worst days since april on these fears. and it is interesting to see russell 2000 selling off for a third day in a row, because of coarse this index, investors thought it was more insulated, but not so much. in fact, let's take a look at the difference between the s&p 500 and the russell 2000 on the year. you can view this chart using the gtv function in the bloomberg. it is a year-to-date chart. in blue, the s&p 500. the last time the s&p 500 all-time made was back in january after the tariffs were announced for washing machines. and then the two indexes correlated quite a bit. now a divergence with the russell 2000 up 7% on the year, s&p 500 up less than a percent on the year as investors think that the russell 2000, the small cap domestically based revenue index is perhaps protected. but take a look at the dip, maybe investors changing their tune. and to talk about that possibility, i want to bring in steve sosnick. last time you jo

here, for instance, is the russell mid cap pure growth pure value versus the russell mid cap. same exercise. let's freeze the orange line and hold it as a constant. so what we've got here, same circumstance values essentially making new lows growth making new highs. now, at what point is it overdone that's the key and that will be the key for the market surely. let's look at this, now, very popular nyse fang plus index you can trade futures on it as of november 8th of last year it's sort of 10 super growth names that are in the technology space. collectively, there are about $4.2 trillion, almost the same as the bottom 270 stocks in the s&p. so let's look at this index chart. here it is first returns. the annualized returns since inception of this index is 29% since 2014 by distinction, we're already up 36% this year. we're annualizing at 93% so the issue is are we a little hot? we are a little hot. in fact, i would draw the lines this way on the chart. here it is past two years and here is the trend line in which the index -- and literally, we stopped over and over and over a
