kennedy and his family and ted kennedy as well. john glenn was there, the hero of the hour, he sat at mrs. kennedy's table. he had just orbited the earth. anyone who wanted to talk to john glenn would soon run for the senate for ohio for the first time, lester pearson, canadian liberal party leader, won nobel peace prize on suess crisis, he would be elected prime minister of canada the following year. robert frost was there, he was 88, he was a magnet all evening for people. of course, frost was -- had become famous for his reciting of the gift outright poem in inago intraiciÓn -- inauguration and president kennedy would send him on a mission, cultural affairs mission to the soviet union. katherine anne porter was there, she had written one novel, she mostly wrote short stories but her one novel on that very day reached number one in "the new york times" best seller list. only nobel female was there, mary hemmingway, as mentioned in the introduction, she sat at president's kennedy table but she also got into an argument over cuba

with a kennedy. the headquarters of the kennedy campaign was in charleston and the dining room served as a pressroom. one night i walked into the pressroom and there was nobody there but robert kennedy. he recognized me enough to know that i was a reporter. he did what all politicians do and still do about reporters. he tried to milk us about we know about the other campaign. what was going on and i had an unexpected 45 minute conversation with robert kennedy where it unfolded . i have got him in here with the kennedy family and the next morning our back to the pressroom which was also the breakfast room. there was my friend, bobby kennedy sitting down with ps salinger and katie o'donnell and two or three other biggies in the campaign. i said, do you mind if you join -- i join you? i did not have breakfast with robert kennedy but as time went on and on the campaign itself which we were traveling together , they found him to be extremely approachable and likable. there was always that side of him and

kennedy. the baltimore sun, the washington star, the los angeles times, the washington post, and together with jack jerman he published a syndicated column. many of you in this audience perhaps remembers jack overtired here to jefferson county after his long career in journalism. jack was also on the maclachlan tv show for a number of years. jules were great friends and colleagues -- college. they wrote many papers together on presidential campaigns. start as a journalist in 1954. in addition to the books he cowrote with jack, he is the author of 13 more books including a biography of jill biden and the resurrection of richard nixon and, more recently, the american vice presidency. our other historian and author is johnnd reporter bohrer who has written in many different papers. he is the author of the " revolution of john kennedy." this is his first book and a good one that explores the kennedy's difficult odyssey after the assassination of his brother in 1963. said jackrough brilliantly capt
