we were established by a couple, kemper and lila williams who were collectors of louisiana materials. what they wanted to do is make what they had already collected available to the public. so in new orleans the founding era what we wanted to start with in this exhibition is kind of establishing some context for what is going on in europe and the earliest interactions with the new world, which to europeans were going to be the americas. so what we start with in this gallery is providing you with the first instance that the new world is featured on a map. this map is by martin walzimuller. the first world map was done in 1507 this is a later printing from 1513 showing the new world. so at this time they know the most about the islands that columbus was interacting with so that's going to include isabella, now modern day cuba and then jamaqui which is now jamaica and spag knoll la which is now haiti and the dominican republic. just northwest of these islands you can see they know a little bit about the gulf of mexico but it's still very ill formed. they have a little bit of florida, but
