they had a strong influence on the music here in new orleans. less than a year ago was a major blow to the city, and to his family of course, he left a wonderful legacy though. and he influenced so many people. with his warmth and his community. so this musician was born in 1897 and died in 1984. she was really well known. she wore bells on her ankles as you could see in this photo right here. she was a wonderful musician and in her later years, she began playing preservation hall and was in -- and was a well- thought-out musician. with got a wonderful video of her performing in the first just -- in the first jazz fest. she had a pretty broad style. >> so now moving into the collection storage areas so come this way. this was a unique drum set here. the drum set, as you could see, the longtime driver -- the longtime drummer of the band. there some wonderful footage of this drum being played in the band. so this would have been the jazz band that was led by kit. we were happy to have this it came to us about six years ago as a donation. right ove

new orleans was an exception in many ways . oldest city, much smaller city and it had this unique french, spanish caribbean history and heritage that really sets it apart from i think virtually any other american city but even new orleans had this same kind of growth logic. it was located at the mouth of the mississippi river so anything coming down the mississippi had to be offloaded to new orleans and onto ocean going vessels so there was a certain logic to why new orleans group where it was at that you have and there is no compelling geographical region for their behavior and center in this area there are a number of factors working against it. to make the city grow here requires a lot of imagination, a lot of out-of-the-box thinking and i contend a certain amount of deception and as we will see, the city that resulted from this extraordinary process of growth turned out to be extraordinary in and of itself . i did something a little different with the prologue of this book. all three of the books have prologues and in this

this is what they went through in new orleans and baton rouge for girls segregated the high school and life threatening the difference that the girls started to fight back and actually that help to make the violent little more manageable. in general people want to know when i write about the jean women what happened afterwards? how did they survive this? most of them were exhausted emotionally and then to figure out what they want to do desegregate because what will people do? many failed out and then they had a hard time. the by the time i interviewed them for those six years after the fact, all of them had achieved to desegregate business offices the chicago symphony orchestra have taken these experiences to use those later in life and if you think about when i them throughout the united states, they did a lot and it was the kind of wisdom from desegregating faces about hatred and to not backhand how to survive. and then i would like to and take the question by mentioning she graduated from university of oklahoma first african-american to pass the bar was actually educated in oklahom
