senator john mccain. the president asked me to be here on behalf of a grateful nation to pay a debt of honor and respect to a man who served our country throughout his life. in uniform and in public office. and it's my great honor to be here. in the long history of our nation, only 30 americans have lane in state here in the united states capitol rotunda. today, as a reflection of the esteem in which his colleagues and our country hold him, senator john mccain joins those ranks. the son and the grandson of four star admirals, john came from a family that prized military service. he entered the united states unable academy when he was just 17 years old. his service as a unable aviator took him around the world and eventually to the war in vietnam. it was there on his 23rd bombing run that john was shot down and captured. refusing early release for the sake of his comrades, he endured five and a half years of confinement and torture. then as now, americans marvelled at the iron will of john mccain. but capt

mccain, our john mccain's grandfather. when i shared this with john and every time i'd see him he'd say we've got to call your dad. that's exactly what we did one day. and i cherish that special connection, mr. president, with a family that has meant so much to our country and to freedom. mr. president, it was an honor to serve with john mccain. i will miss his sense of humor and the passion that he brought to every battle. i admired him greaterly. he reminded me and all of us every day that life is not about advancing ourselves but about serving a greater cause. and that paradoxically, it is in service that we find freedom. in his farewell message to his country men john said, and i quote, to be connected to america's causes, respect, liberty and justice and dignity for all people brings happiness more sublime than life's fleeting pleasures. our identities and sense of worth are not circumscribed but enhrargd by serving good causes that are bigger than ourselves. end quote. mr. president, already the new class of midshipm

you competed against john mccain and you also campaigned with john mccain. tell us your fondest memory. >> the fondest memory was not when he beat me, john, i will tell you that. [laughter] it was never personal. in fact, john mccain was able to defeat me in south carolina and that was the turning point. i was getting momentum up until that time but he had decided that if he did not win south carolina he was pulling out because he was about out of gas and out of money and i was a critical moment. he and fred thompson had a great plan. the plan was fred would stay in the race, use ready to get out, fred would stay and basically drive back and forth between greenville and freiburg and beat the stuffing out of me every day. that is where my strength was an mccain strength was down in the low country in charleston. it was a very effective strate strategy. we still thought we might pull it off. john mccain ended up winning soccer liner and went on to win the nomination. it was one of the things the people said to that you upset that they had that strategy and i s

john mccain had both. fortunately, all that intensity came paired with a world class sense of humor. as we all know, john really hated to lose. the line he used after his presidential campaigns still makes me laugh. some would ask how he's copying with defeat and john would say, actually, i'm sleeping like a baby. wake up every two hours and cry. seriously, it's hard to describe this larger than life figure without lapsing into what sounds like cliches. we've all heard our whole lives about the importance of patriotism and self-sacrifice. but we cannot take that culture of commitment for granted because just like our nation's security and our american liberty, the very notion that some causes really are greater than ourselves only survives because service members and statesmen like john mccain will fight and even die to defend it. the bond between john and his country was so deep, but of course other bonds ran deeper still. while john's colleagues grieve our own loss, we also send our love and support to t

what was it like to cover and deal with the senator john mccain and john mccain the person. reporter: really a fascinating character. he was serious about the issues, you heard him talk about the iraq war and afghanistan and policy matters. you see mccain when you are about to do a life shot with us or another network. he would wink with a twinkle in his eye. he would say what are you doing, boy? i would look over and realize i was being heckled by john mccain. my understanding is john mccain believed if we were telling the stories about what's going on and writing the stories in our nation's politics, having a relationship would help us know what he was thinking with his votes over the years. howie: i think he enjoyed the give and take with the press. he was such a fixture on the sunday shows. he was the most of frequent guest on "meet the press" ever. sometimes he got testy or i am patients with journalists. but i think he viewed it as another form of combat. >> reporter: no question. i think he enjoyed being the senior statesman on cap hill. putting his arm around a new m

john mccain understood that. it's not good enough to be smart and committed to your positions on public policy. it's not good enough just to be there for votes and for debates. that's obviously critical, but character still matters, and john mccain was living proof of that. i remember one occasion where we had, he and i had an acrimonious exchange in the senate elevators just a couple of seconds when the elevator went from the basement to the second floor. john was very heated. i was taken by surprise at how heated he was. yet as we've heard so many times over the past several days, john mccain never let a public policy disagreement impact personal relationships with his colleagues. a couple of hours later we were back on the senate floor, and i wanted to continue the argument, and i started to approach him on the floor to continue the argument. i guess i wanted to get the last word, which might be a mistake with john mccain. but as i got close to him, john mccain lifted up his arms and reached out to me, embrace

that was john mccain. it was john mccain. but before that he usually would be working hard to get people to come to the table, recognize common ground, and truly be bipartisan. he wasn't an angel, and he wasn't a magician, but he was a real good senator. he really worked -- he respected the process. but something else that doug reminded me of. john mccain was a champion for democracy around the world. his role at the international republican institute where they helped to spread democracy around the globe was dramatic. he left such an important legacy of the importance of democracy as a governing opportunity where people have their voices heard. and he was a champion of that in the united states, but more significantly he made sure that the shining city on the hill, the united states of america, was a beacon of democracy to the rest of the world. he sacrificed a lot to spread that democracy, and he did it in a very challenging way in some very tough places around the world when he said, you're a selfish government, you should
