check in with matt keller live on the scene for us this morning. what can you tell us about this investigation? >> well, alexis, since i last saw you the coroner has arrived and once they're done with their investigation they will open up all the lanes here on northbound 101. currently the slow lane and the millbrae exit ramp are still blocked off. this crash happened at about 4:00 this morning. chp told me it appears the person was just walking on the highway trying to get across it when they were hit by a vehicle. they died at the scene. the chp has not arrested the driver of the vehicle. it appears to be an accident. they are towing that car from the scene. they're hoping to have all lanes open by 7:00. we will see how long the investigation takes with the coroner. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. >>> developing news from the south bay, san jose police are searching for the driver who smashed into a car and then into this home. police were called to a house on angie avenue in south jackson street just before 11:00 p.m. when officers got th

abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at sfo this morning for us. matt? >> good morning, jessica and reggie. going through security at airports is not fun, but many people are concerned and confused about the latest proposal, believing it could make flying unsafe. this is just a proposal, no final decision has been made yet. the tsa proposal is to eliminate security screenings at more than 150 small and medium sized airports that operate commercial planes with 60 seats or less, about 10,000 daily passengers. those passengers and their luggage would be screened at the larger airports like sfo before leaving on their connecting flight. so why would they do that? according to cnn the move would save $115 million which could be used to bolster safety at larger airports. tsa's operating theory is smaller planes are less attractive targets to terrorists. security expert rick smith spoke to abc 7 news by phone and worries without screening weapons could be brought on to planes. >> you open up a hole there in security and you compromise the entire system. so i do

abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in san jose. matt? >> good morning, jessica and reggie. we're about two hours away from the office here in san jose from opening up and we already have our first person in line, anthony. he just told me he took a vacation day to come here early to wait in line to be the first one here at the dmv. you don't have to take a day off. that's because they're going to be opening up on saturdays. the saturday hours are expanding to more dmv field offices. 60 offices across california open from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m., 14 in the bay area, including daly city and hayward. it's gotten so bad some people say they've waited in lines nine hours or longer. the dmv says that's because of the implementation of real i.d. people can't get those on-line or through the mail. they have to show up. the dmv opened up the san jose driver's license processing center and the oakland office an hour earlier during the week to help cut down those long lines. the dmv says they're working on hiring more employees to help but until then, it's best to try to make an appointment

matt keller live for us in san jose. matt? >> good morning, reggie and jessica. what a wild night for san jose police. first it started as a carjacking and then a pursuit, eventually they arrested several people, all of them were just kids. take a look at the video from where this all ended here in san jose. this is in the area of mclaughlin avenue and lupa avenue. five suspects involved. the officer taking the report was driving down mclaughlin and spotted the car. tried to get them to stop. the driver took off. the police helicopter helped out. police say eventually the car stopped and everyone ran. officers set up a perimeter in the neighborhood, canines were brought in. six juveniles ended up being arrested, two bitten by the dogs, two were taken away on a gurney and put in ambulances and the others handcuffed and put in the back of patrol cars. police say the carjacking victim will get their vehicle back. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. >>> the other big stories this morning the poor air quality that we just mentioned with

abc 7 news reporter matt keller live for us in menlo park with the reaction to this major break. matt? >> this is a big deal for this community. almost nine years after this tragic death, menlo park police say they finally got their man. this is a picture of the suspect, his name is shannon fox. police say he was street racing in november of 2009 when he slammed into a car caring the xavier family near willow road and bayfront expressway in menlo park. 6-year-old lisa xavier was killed. fox was identified as the suspect but never found until now. people in the community were wondering if the hit-and-run case would ever be solved. >> i'm glad they're getting him. after nine years. you know, justice will be served. >> that won't bring back lisa but will hopefully provide some closure for the families. >> reporter: lisa xavier was a first grader at laurel elementary school when killed. a tree on campus is lit once a year in her honor. today a news conference at 9:00 a.m. is expected to shed more light on the arrest of fox and where he was found. reporting live here in menlo park, ma

. >> abc7 news reporter matt keller just arrived there and, matt, what are you seeing? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, jessica and reggie. i'm seeing an impressive plume of smoke off bush road in pleasanton. firefighters fighting this defensively. see a couple of them on top of ladders spraying that water right now on to the building and told that nobody's inside and doing this for at least another hour trying to get the flames out. they believe they can get it contained within an hour but this is a fencing company according to the fire department. and that there are mixed materials inside that are burning. that includes fencing materials, vehicles. there's an office inside this building. there's also a transfer station for the garbage company here and vehicles coming in and out of this area but they say there's no threat to this fire spreading to any other buildings in this area but that plume of smoke is huge. i asked if there was a shelter in place for anybody nearby. they said, no, that is not the case. tl there is not any residential areas. the smoke not impacting

reporter matt keller is live in san jose. matt? >> good morning, jessica and reggie. local authorities say juvenile crime is on the rise and these kids are getting bolder and bolder. overnight another major incident where six juveniles ended up getting arrested. take a look at the video. this is the scene of where it all ended. this is in the area of mclaughlin avenue, lupe and tourist road in san jose. the carjacking took place before 10:00 last night. five suspects involved. get this, the officer taking the report was then driving down when he spotted the car. he tried to get them to stop but the driver took off. san jose's police helicopter helped out. police say eventually they jumped out and ran. canines were brought in. six ended up being arrested, two bitten by the dogs, taken away on a gurney and put into ambulances. the others were handcuffed and put in the back of patrol cars. police say the carjacking victim will get their vehicle back. reporting live here in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. >>> if you stepped outside yesterday afternoon you

abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in menlo park. matt? >> good morning, jessica and reggie. this is a big deal for this community. such a tragic death almost nine years ago. now menlo park police say they finally got their man. here is a picture of the suspect. his name is shannon fox. police say he was street racing in november of 2009 when he slammed into a car carrying the xavier family near the intersection of willow road and bayfront expressway in menlo park. 6-year-old lisa xavier was killed. fox was identified as the suspect. police say he fled the area and the country. he was never caught until now. people in the community were wondering if this hit-and-run case would be solved. >> i'm glad they're getting him. after nine years. justice will be served. >> that won't bring back lisa but it will hopefully provide closure for the families. >> reporter: lisa xavier was a first grader at laura elementary school when she was killed. a tree hon campus is lit once a year in her honor. a news conference at 9:00 a.m. is expected to shed light on fox's arrest. reporting live he

matt keller, abc 7 news. >>> thank you. happening today, federal investigators will send the black boxes from a stolen passenger plane to washington, d.c. they found the flight data recorder and part of the cockpit recorder in the plane's wreckage south of seattle yesterday. the devices should provide clues about what was going on inside the cockpit of the horizon air turboprop. 29-year-old richard russell stole the plane and flew it more than an hour. he made wild loops before the plane crashed into an island. people who knew russell are stunned. >> you could tell he was in pain kind of seemed a little delusional andi was just shocked to see that someone who was so nice, so helpful, and caring actually, he cared about his job,to do such a thing. >> authorities are trying to confirm if recovered human remains are russell. he was a grounds service worker for horizon air and didn't have a pilot's license. >>> the white house is launching a full counterattack againstar . she's released a secret recording from the day she was f

matt keller is live with where this guy has been all this time. >> reporter: police say this case was never a cold case. they had always been searching for justice for lisa xavier. the search led them to guatemala. it took a big team but police finally got their man. >> i'm here to announce the capture, arrest and extradition of shannon steven fox who has been a fugitive from just frs almost eight years. >> reporter: police say fox was street racing in a ford mustang against a honda prelude back on the afternoon of november 12, 2009. his car crashed into a toyota camry carrying a mom, dad and their daughter. 6-year-old lisa xavier was killed. >> the driver of the ford mustang exited his vehicle, got into the vehicle he had been racing with and both suspects escaped from the scene. >> reporter: police named shannon fox as a person of interest. he had an address in east palo alto at the time. police say they learned he travelled to the u.s./mexico border and crossed over into central america. he was arrested in guatemala more than seven years later in december of 2016. after several app

abc 7 news reporter matt keller live outside the jail with the story. matt? >> change could be coming soon. state senator skinner plans on introducing a bill so people aren't released in the middle of the night from jail. a rally was held at jail followed with a nearly two-mile walk to the dublin bart station. they were protesting the release of female inmates in the early morning hours. this push for change comes nearly one month after the death of 26-year-old jessica st. louis. she was released around 1:30 in the morning after dead at the d bart station. while foul play has been ruled out, it does highlight the issue of releasing vulnerable people at a time of day when they're less likely to get help. >> we're still totally shocked by the situation that took place for them to release her at such a late hour in the morning as you can see, it's totally dark, with just the bart ticket and no cell phone, with allowing her to have no communication with us. we did not kno released. >> reporter: the coroner says st. louis's death appears to be from a drug overdose

. >> abc 7 news reporter matt keller live for us at the santa clara county health department with tips on how to keep you and your kids healthy. matt? >> good morning, reggie and jessica. most kids here in the south bay are starting school and health officials want to make sure everybody gets vaccinated. >> measles spreads like wildfire among people that aren't vaccinated. >> reporter: new numbers from the centers for disease control and prevention shows so far this year at least 107 people across the country have already reported getting the measles with eight of them reported here in santa clara county. measles is a highly contagious, airborne virus spread through coughing and sneezing. in most cases symptoms show up about two weeks after exposure. health officials are reminding parents state law requires all kindergarten through 12th grade students to get the vaccine unless a medical reason. >> it's very, very rare to see measles in schools and it's partially because we are diligent in getting those immunizations and making sure the children are immunized against measles. >> reporte

abc 7 news reporter matt keller has the story from san jose. >> reporter: 142 men from san jose lost their lives in the vietnam war. army veteran dennis fernandez felt led to build a memorial for them. >> i came back. i was fortunate. a couple of my buddies came back. we said, let's see if we can build a memorial. >> reporter: after several years of planning the san jose vietnam war memorial was unveiled in march of 2013 in the park next to the s.a.p. center. it was built to be a quiet place for family and friends to remember and reflect on the memories of their loved ones. but over the weekend it was vandalized. sometime on saturday a person used what is believed to be a paint pen to write on the wall. fernandez says many people have reached out to him in disbelief. >> they were very hurt about it. we received comments from them, who could do such a deplorable thing to a memorial? that's sacred ground. they should respect it. >> reporter: this is the second time the memorial has been vandalized. fernandez says the last time was about two years ago. this time, though, removing the pa

matt keller live in san jose. matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and jessica. visiting the dmv has never been a great experience, but recently the lines have gotten so bad you can end up spending the whole day here. at least now you won't have to miss work to do that. the dmv is expanding its saturday hours at several field offices starting tomorrow. 60 offices will be open every saturday from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. 14 are in the bay area including daly city and hayward. it's gotten so bad some people say they've waited in lines nine hours or longer. dmv says that's because of the implementation of real i.d. people can't get those on-line or through the mail. they have to show up. the dmv opened up the driver's license processing center and the oakland clairmont field office an hour earlier during the week to cut down on long lines. they're working on hiring more xloo employees to help, but it's best to make an appointment. for a list of all the dmvs on saturday you can head to our website, abc7news.com. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank

reporting live, matt keller. abc7 news. >> thank you. >>> the utah firefighter killed battling the mendocino fire has been identified. take a close look here. this is battalion chief matthew burchett. he died yesterday after being injured the day before. we just got his i.d. details of what happened to him have not yet been released. news of his death has devastated the small town of draymonder southwest of salt lake city. >> he came to the fire department in may of this year. prior to working for draymonder he worked the unified fire authority for 25 years. he leaves behind a wife and a handsome young son. he was 42 years old. >> our thoughts with his family in that community. burchett was one of about 40 utah firefighters from seven agencies deployed to the fires burning across california. the crews battling the mendocino complex fire are making tremendous fire thanks to the break in the weather. the fire made up of two separate blazes. the river fire now 100% contained after burning nearly 49,000 acres. the ra
