host: we are back with our reporters, sean and alexis. alexis, let me begin with you. you asked the question, will they take that the house? what does it look like right now? alexis: it looks like democrats are favored to pick up a lot of steam. it where the margin of that ends up is anyone's guess. i think after the 2016 election, i stopped wanting to feel like i knew the future. sean was saying this before, he is cautiously optimistic. 23,: they have to pick up sean. is it an uphill battle? sean: when you look at the turn outcome the primaries, the president's approval ratings, a lot of democrats thought the presidency was for them in 2016 , and it did not work out for them. i think that is why we are using caution. certainly, things are looking encouraging for the democrats, a matter of will their coalition actually turnout on election day. we don't know yet. f democraticked i leader in the house nancy pelosi is a liability. what do the polls say? how are democrats responding to that attack from their republican opponents? sean: some democrats have completely separa

alexis: i think trump looms over everything. which is why i was sort of taken aback, we got so far into the conversation without bringing him up. i think it's a mixed bag. republicans will tell you that trump is the single best way to motivate their base. but the best way to get base republicans to the poll is to have trump be there. but a lot of these races that are in the battlefield are just not those really base-heavy districts. you have more moderate voters, independent voters that are not so keen on trump. i think democrats have an interesting task of convincing republicans that would never think to vote. maybe it is ok to do that this cycle, whether or not they can pull that off. sean: there are a lot of voters on the democratic perspective. they feel that, for voters motivated by trump, they don't need to remind voters about trump. they see it every day and on the news. they are seeing the president's tweets. they see the stories about him. alexis, to your point, they are trying to convince voters that it is ok to crosso

alexi: especially as the alexi mccammond: especially has the president has made public plans to campaign as much as he can through november. republicans think that is an asset. we know there are places where that could hurt him, especially where hillary clinton one and places are more competitive and we have seen heightened enthusiasm in the primaries so far. i am curious to see how that is handled by republicans, but until then, we have seen the president work in their favor. stephen law: given how unpopular the president is with the electorate and the unmistakable good some aquatic year, that steven law even to as "the blue wave" when he was answering your question about the so-called "red wave," he said that the house is in an uphill fight now for his party. even with all that, it is pretty extraordinary that he is so calm and at ease when you talk about the gop holding the senate. he did not have any doubt at all that his party was can a halt the senate and said they are guaranteed to pick up at least one seat in north dakota, and perhaps two if missouri hangs on. do another state fl

alexi: what message or topic has fired up donors? steven: in general, our constituency of donors is interested in winning races. they want to see an opportunity to change the senate in a positive direction and increase the strength of the majority. there was an early, strong interest in defending the house. that was an easy sale. we have to help defend the house . republican donors were responsive to that. what we have seen is the importance of the senate firewall in case the house is thesaved in november, and one thing about supreme court nominations it reminds people that is what the senate does, the personnel business, so we have seen a surge in interest in the importance of making sure we hold on to the senate. it seems the house is in jeopardy of flipping. is that fair to say? steven: i would not write it off. i think we continue to see each week the scenario changes somewhat. we are competitive, but it is an uphill climb. jonathan: how does that shape what you do and your interaction with party strategists and donors, does the
