erica hill is live in fayetteville with more. what's the situation there today, erica? >> reporter: at this moment, this water just behind me is not supposed to be this high. this is a number of creeks in the area. i think our drone is -- we're going to try to get a drone shot here. we've been going out in the neighborhoods to see. we saw this water bubbling up between the asphalt and the concrete on the side of the road here. that's a major concern, blue sky, break in the rain. that's fantastic. the issue is that the waters are continuing to rise. there's water coming from downstreams, other saturated areas. two main rivers we're looking at are the cape fear and the little river. mandatory evacuations are in place for a mile around those rivers. in fact, police officers, firefighters going door to door over the weekend, explaining to people why they need to get out. the resistance for some folks is i made it through matthew okay. we're going to be fine. the mayor says that is absolutely the wrong attitude to have. he and fire officials tell me they've learned a lot fro

erica hill joins us there with the latest. you see these pictures, particularly from the air, and it looks like communities have become islands in a river. what are you seeing where you are? >> reporter: yeah, and in some areas they certainly have. that's the case in wilmington, north carolina. in fayetteville, the road behind me was closed when we came down here this morning. it was open last night. people have been driving around these barriers all morning. police officer came by and dragged these signs back across the road and said people have been moving them this morning because they want to get where they need to go. that's a major concern here for folks in fayetteville. there's welcome respite, obviously, from the water but the threat is really now just only beginning. the mayor telling me his biggest concern is how quickly the water is moving. we're focused specifically on the little river and cape fear river here. folks within a mile of those rivers are under mandatory evacuations and matthew is also really top of min

i'm erica hill in today for ana cabrera in new york. not one but two hurricanes now barrelling towards the east coast. florence and now helene, which has been upgraded to a category 1 storm. there's also a third major system making its way west in the atlantic. that is tropical storm isaac. so hurricane florence, as you can see on the map, is the closest. forecasters fear it will become a category 3 storm or worse before making landfall later this week. meteorologist tom sader is in the weather center with more. just the fact we have these three storms, pretty powerful in the atlantic at the same time, is that unusual? >> this time of year, erica, these little lows come off the coast of africa, and they typically develop. tomorrow is the peak of the atlantic turn season. we've had an extremely quiet first half. too much saharan dust, temperatures tool.
