that's where griff jenkins is standing by. still coming down? >> finally, after more than 30 hours, florence has continued her fire hose off. it's pitch black. everywhere you drive along highway 70, it goes up to the city of raleigh, you just see trees ripped out by their roots, store fronts destroyed, a gas station collapsed, power lines down everywhere in small sections of flooding over in atlantic beach. morehead city is on the coast. it's pitch black over there except for one condo building, looks like it may have auxillary lights on. the fire chief is trying to get a handle on everything. the pier is broken in half. it's gone out to sea. let me give you a little bit of news. i got off the phone with officials in new bern. they say they have about a hundred more rescues they are carrying out at this moment. they have done more than 375. one of the challenges they have right now is where to put the people they are rescuing. they have run out of space. because of the epic flooding, they are trapped on where they can take people to. one of the

griff jenkins is there. you have been there this morning. you have been showing us the damage. what are you seeing across that area? >> reporter: a welcome more free from the rain. a few drops coming, much like everyone else that is not good news. there is a lot of wind damage at morehead city where we get you to the videos coming out of new bern yesterday. highway 70, 40 miles north of here, can't get there because of the flooding. there are rescues continuing at this hour. officials tell me they are working on 100 right now. yesterday a total of 375 rescues. they have a new problem and that is what to do with the people being rescued. they are taking them to cherry point because they have run out of places. the flooding continues, storm surge and the noose river causing the problem, down a little bit, receded four to six feet is expected to rise again, maybe as high as its 9 to 10 foot levels with rain coming. it is up to mother nature to determine what will happen for days and weeks, more rain is not a good thing. the bridge between here and morehead and there is flooded in

griff jenkins rejoins us from the gas station that was destroyed by the storm. you wonder what daybreak will bring. >> reporter: it is going to bring rain but we are enjoying a break from the lashing we took last year. you wonder what they would come home to. here at morehead city they will come home to a lot of wind damage but the flooding is the story right now because of the area inland, near highway 70, the national weather service posting pictures of highway 70 on the way towards the town of newport and new bern where they had those rescues. i talked to those folks, they are pursuing 100 rescues, 375 yesterday. they have extensive flooding into the north they are totally cut off greenville. it is unbelievable. look at this devastation. this gas station absolutely pummeled. it is not isolated. all along highway 70 in morehead, trees ripped out of the ground by their roots, roofs ripped off businesses, homes with trees smashed into them, power lines down. every street you go along with a lot of debris all over the road and the flooding is occurring here. the

rob: one of those places is politics bill, north carolina where we find griff jenkins as the water continues to rise. any sense that is the case? >> reporter: these rivers because of prolonged storm surge and epic rainfall, taking these communities, cutting them off. polluxville is south of newburgh, underwater, totally cut off, it is the lumber river in lumberton and the trent river the crested beyond record that was hit during hurricane floyd in 1999. when we came up here, 150 to 200 rescues, we went and talked to the county manager, as blackhawk helicopters were delivering supplies. here's what he had to say. >> we have resources coming in to help, delivering bottled water, folks haven't had water for several days. no one has seen anything like this. we experience flooding back in floyd, we exceeded all those records now. it is pretty devastating. >> reporter: we know now that today, maybe tomorrow will be the day so many of these rivers will crest. in new bern, the news river is causing those evacuations. pushing up there later today, down in jacksonville where i was yesterday, we went o

we begin with our own griff jenkins in atlantic beach, north carolina where people are facing a guam threat this morning, good morning, griff. >> that's right. we have all the components for a catastrophic, life-threatening weather event that could last for days. let me show you why. hurricane winds 140 miles per hour or thereabouts expected to come across here and certainly the outer northern bands. you can hear rumbling behind me, i think. that's not quite the storm yet. you will get the storm surge here as well. they are saying 9 to 13 feet. that is unbelievable as well as expected flooding because of the low lying inlands. we have four rivers here that was absolutely flooded, devastatingly so two years ago with hurricane matthew. you have the rainfall. if this does indeed stall and put 25 inches it will be extremely dangerous. two years ago there are areas that still have not recovered where the noose river is. areas under 25 feet of water. for the folks try to stay behind and ride it out here. they need to know one thing, they are likely to be stranded and it's likely to be life

that's where we find griff jenkins live where the water continues to rise. griff? >> that's right. it's all about the rivers cresting at, about, or just above record levels here in poll locksville. this entire town cut off by the trent river u it's unbelievable. they have had to fly in helicopters, national guard brings in supplies for these folks. entire communities either stranded inside or being rescued being brought out. this is what the county manager frankie howard had to say. >> that we got resources coming in to help our citizens here in the county. they are delivering mres and bottled water. we have folks who haven't had water for several days and food. nobody living in jones county has experienced anything like this. we experienced flooding back in floyd. we have exceeded all those records now. and it's pretty devastating. >> we're about 15 miles south of new bern. have you heard about the rescues there. more than 200 there. about 150 here in the last few days. one of the people rescued yesterday as we were here was named clayton freyer and he was glad to finally get out.

todd: griff jenkins joins us from north carolina where he spoke to sums -- servicemembers containing the devastation. >> reporter: in recovery mode in fayetteville but waters still rising in north carolina and south carolina, the governor visited fayetteville talking with the squads the worked so hard around-the-clock. and cooperation with the administration has been going well. here is what he had to say. >> hundreds of rescues have occurred. i'm grateful to the men and women who do this. amazing how we were able to pull together as americans to get this job done. i spoke with and mess with the president, giving us what we need, they promised help in the long haul. we will hold them to it. >> reporter: the governor saying we are not out of the woods yet. a big part of this operation has come from fort bragg, you know how big that base is and the commanding general of the third expeditionary command talked to me yesterday about the role they play. listen. >> we had 16 teams across eastern north carolina and those teams are out. we have a ways to go because as you know the floodwaters

griff jenkins joins us from fayetteville, north carolina in the wake of donald trump's visit to the hardest hit areas. >> reporter: it could take years to rebuild, days or weeks to get this downtown bridge in fayetteville reopen, the cape fear river, because it is pressing 61 feet yesterday. look at this amazing drone footage. it was launched by councilman jim are, fayetteville city council. the widespread damage here, there was one loss of life in this storm in fayetteville and it will cost millions of dollars once they get into recovery mode. we spoke with the mayor here about what he needs and his message he had for donald trump. >> i would like to thank them for expediting the emergency declaration and i ask he allow a flow of resources to get from the federal level to the state. hopefully those resources float from the federal level to the state. i ask him to make sure any barriers are removed as soon as possible. >> reporter: fayetteville dodged a bullet because 30 miles south of here they had 36, 3 feet inches, 3 feet of rain, 15 or 16 in the city, had it been different it could have
