this summer the massachusetts state legislature issued a report saying that massachusetts was the most unequal funding for local schools. they are now funding schools at the 2002 level. at the same time the forces attacked the massachusetts standards in order to get top funding and following the financial crisis in 2008 massachusetts was essentially forced to replace the massachusetts standards with the common core which experts agree was inferior to the massachusetts curriculum. massachusetts loved -- so in 2016 went dark money flooded into the state to support a referendum that would increase the charter school the initiative was resoundingly disputed by voters by a 2-1 margin. it's not only in massachusetts that public schools are beginning to be defended by their local communities. there's a wonderful blogger by the name of jennifer berkshire who has a tremendous podcast that i would recommend to you. called have you heard? is also writing the book and she's been traveling the midwestern states to talk to local communities about how they feel about their schools. one of the places
