, rob whitman, he serves on the armed services and natural resources committee, the republican of virginia, good morning. >> good morning, pedro. >> could you talk about the areas of the commonwealth, particularly where you serve and how they might be affected by florence? >> absolutely. well the governor has done an evacuation in what's called zone a, the very low-lying areas, places like mathews county, a mandatory evacuation. those are areas likely to be affected by storm surge and even by heavy amounts of rain. that has been put in place by the governor, local emergency services coordinators are monitoring those areas to make sure citizens know what they can and cannot expect if winds are over 40 miles an hour, there will not be first responders available to go to those areas. all those issues are taken care of with those local governments. the second area is with our military. the naval station norfolk, ships have been sent to sea. two aircraft carriers, the "george h.w. bush" and "the abraham lincoln" sent to sea as well as 14 other surface ships and those are now at sea. additionall

it sounds like you are perhaps a northern virginia locality. >> i didn't say that. >> in virginia, we established electronic poll book standards a couple of years ago that require testing and certification of polls, not just to make sure if they work appropriately but they meet state security standards. so i think those pole pads in particular had specific requirements about how they get deployed. the use of networks to make them as secure as possible, certainly a preference is not to have those but those systems, kind of with the wireless functionality baked in, but i think there are some state requirements around security that they have to meet and also at the local level, they are doing secure storage, they are doing updates prior to elections, doing kind of a password deployment so they are taking those additional steps at the local level before they feel -- field them to make them as secure as possible heading into the election. >> i guess another thing to add is having paper backups in the polling place and enough provisional ballots so that if something really does go wrong, it
