the uss san diego was doing everything correctly, zigzagging for torpedoes and the commander had even inspected some of the coal loaded at the earlier report for sabotage, bombs and things like that. but, as they were coming into new york harbor, just 10 miles away from fire island on long island there was an explosion and they didn't see -- some of the crew claim they saw u-boat and thought they were hit by your torpedo but later on they found a minefield in the area but san diego sink quickly, luckily with relatively little loss of life, unfortunately six it navy sailors did die but, it brought the you boy -- the u- boat war home to the united states, the largest warship sunk in world war i, the uss san diego sink right outside new york, these guys were preparing for shore leave and instead found themselves swimming in the water. lucky for them, they were on convoy protection duty off the u.s. coast beating them out to the mid-atlantic, and she was actually going to pick up a convoy at the time but lucky for them, the people they were trying to protect arrived on scene and were able
