ktva in anchorage, alaska. that news room clearly damaged earlier today from the 7.0 earthquake that hit the anchorage area earlier. that earthquake, the aftershocks are now being felt as far as 350 miles away. on the coast of alaska in certain areas there's now a warning for possible tsunamis with residents there being instructed to move inland to some higher ground. we're going to keep you up on this story. that's taking place in anchorage alaska where the earthquake hit earlier today. i'm now going to hand you off to katie tur who is down in washington, d.c. >>> we're going to continue to follow this story. a 7.0 earthquake on the richter scale hitting seven miles north of anchorage, alaska. as we can see from the damage it doesn't look so good up there. the shaking lasted for 20 to 30 seconds. that could be a not quite that long. it feels like it's stronger while you're in the middle of it. a magnitude 7.0 earthquake has caused significant

this is close to anchorage, alaska. all of these bright yellow colors are people in those areas that claim they felt it and felt decent shaking, not just light shaking. around this vicinity, you will have a lot of people this particular earthquake was at a depth of around 40 kilometers. a lot of these numbers will adjust in the short minutes after it takes place. they have to take a look at all of the data. again, for reference, this is anchorage. all of this yellow area you see here is people that felt strong or very strong shaking. the green areas indicate light or moderate shaking. the further you get from that particular epicenter, obviously the lighter shaking you are going to feel. this particular earthquake, a 6.6 is the latest numbers that we have give or take 40 kilometers. that's relatively shallow, but anything that is 70 or less, we consider to be shallow. the shallower an earthquake, the more likely you are to feel it. if there were a threat, the shallower the earthquake. that will have an impact. the paper

a powerful 7.0 earthquake caused major damage after striking just outside of the city of anchorage, alaska. trace gallagher is standing by with the latest. >> this was a big one. a number of roads around anchorage have been damaged including the seward highway. traffic is backed up for several miles. the seward highway was shutdown because of a rock slide. a lot of major access roads are open or in the process of being reopened. remember there was a tsunami warning earlier. people were told to go to higher ground. they are trying to get back into their homes. and bridges, the inregitty hasn't been checked out. electricity, 7,000 homes and businesses without power. one of the primary substations has just gone back on line. there are no reports of any powerlines down. that's good news for the crews trying to get those electricity needs up and running again. the amazing thing. the fire chief said that they went and scanned around anchorage and found no major stri structural damage of the buildings. alaska airlines is back up and running and flights are going back to and from the airport. the
