just to clarify john. lewis go ahead. we have work in the morning and i had someone give me the article as far as i'm even sure a county can scan it and it shows that opening fire was like ten minutes prior to college on when to go to college and i have borderline. a grand. it's probably about five hundred kids anywhere from eighteen to thirty four years old and i was there for about five months i became very family oriented area very close with those that i worked with and some of the regulars that were there every single day. a lot of my coworkers and friends as i got to know them they were at and you want to vent which we've got a good shooting so a lot of them are going to be p.t.s. . those results are the first thing i had was kind of. getting had to go through a second time more empathetic i am thankful that i was not having to. be had been much if i would have been that security guard on duty and you know we're hearing that that security guard at the door was the been one of those who've been injured out of eleven

so, i started meeting with people in the smithsonian and meeting with congressman john lewis, who was the primary advocate at that time for this museum in congress. and a group of friends and i formed a nonprofit organization to do what we could to support the effort. i became obsessed. i will confess, with this effort. so much so that i went to three days a week on my job and was spending the other four days working on this. and then, in august of 2000, i had the revelation that maybe if i could work on this full-time, you know, it could help move this project towards the finish line. and so i shared with my wife that i need to quit my job to work on this full-time. she was seven months pregnant with our second child. but being the determined lawyer that i am, i was a public defender, i gave the best closing argument of my life, and i got her to say yes. and we agreed that we would go from two incomes to one and change our day care arrangements and eat a lot of beans and cornbread and do what we had to do to try to push for this. but it was also, i guess, a need in me to work on this

we have john lewis of georgia. congressman lewis of course is a civil rights icon who spent his youth fighting for the african-american right to vote. he has been campaigning for stacey abrams for governor. let's talk about georgia and that governor's race. i mean, in some ways it epitomizes what we have seen all over the country in terms of what the tone has degenerated to. so it's been divisive and toxic. where do you think we are today in this country? >> well, racist is still deeply embedded in american society. we need to lay down the burden for racism and separation and create what i call one america, one community, one house because all of us live in the same house in the american house. as dr. king said on many occasions, we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters. if not, we will perish as fools. >> it is impossible to argue with those words, of course. but do you have any optimism that even if, say, democrats were to win the house of representatives today that something would change in the ton

one of the hundred 20 americans awarded the medal of honor for their actions and world war i john lewis berkeley was in the third division of the american expeditionary forces on october 8 of 1918, he was acting as an observer and he realized that there was a whole regiment that was given to around him if he did not refill himself and he basically came up with a plan to protect his regiment. he climbed inside and took a machine gun and he knew how to repair it being a scout and he let the germans go by him and in the battle he killed at least 200, may 2 40 -- maybe 240 regiments -- soldiers and saved his regiment from being attacked from the rear. when he left he only had a couple of burns from bullets and when they went back after the pedal to look at the tank and to assess what he had done, they found over 4000 cartridges in the tank. for his action of that day, thinking of no one but his own men, he was awarded the medal of honor and after the war he became a celebrity. he was in new york with the publication of the book that he wrote about his time and world war i called no hard fee

john lewis obviously has been campaigning for you. is that part of it, just as a girl, as a woman, as a person, is that daunting to you at all, to have that kind of sort of star power behind you, does it put pressure on you? >> i think it is a signal of how important georgia is to america. sally yates was there yesterday, and she has become a national figure because of how hard she's defended our democracy. what i see is this isn't about me. and i don't mean this to be self-deprecating. i mean it to say, we saw the sea change first when november 6th, 2016 happened. what people are finding is that this is a way to reclaim who we are as americans. knowing that georgia, the cradle of the civil rights movement but also an important, fast-growing state, can be a signal of what else can be done. and while i am incredibly overwhelmed, sometimes, getting to sit there and ask oprah a question is an amazing dream, and getting a hug from barack obama is awesome, i encourage everyone to try it, it's more to me about why they think georgia matters
